Seroprevalence and risk factors associated with infection by Neospora caninum of dairy cattle in the state of Alagoas, Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in cattle from milk producing farms of the microregion of Batalha, state of Alagoas, Brazil, as well as to identify the risk factors associated with the infection. Blood samples were collected from 1,004 cattle of 17 farms for the serological investigation regarding the presence of anti-N. caninum antibodies by the Indirect Immunofluorescence Reaction Technique (IMRT). From the total amount of samples analyzed, 77… Show more

“…This prevalence is similar to that revealed by surveys conducted in the state of Minas Gerais (COSTA et al, 2001;MINEO et al, 2006) and from other states of Brazil (BENETTI et al, 2009;CORBELLINI et al, 2006;MELO et al, 2006;RAGOZO et al, 2003;SOUSA et al, 2012). There are reports of higher prevalence in cows aged less than 24 months: 43.66% (93/213) and 47.97% (154/321) in two dairy herds in Minas Gerais (SANTOS et al, 2009), and 50.4% (412/812) in dairy cattle in the state of Maranhão (TEIXEIRA et al, 2010).…”

“…The serological result was considered the dependent variable, positive or negative for N. caninum. Statistically significant difference was determined when the results showed P<0.05 in the univariate and multivariate analysis (TRIOLA, 2005;SOUZA et al, 2012 originated from the municipality of Pirajuí, in the state of São Paulo. Statistically significant differences were observed between the seropositivity and municipality (P=0.00) of origin.…”

“…caninum antibodies were identified by IFAT according to the technique of BJÖRKMAN & UGGLA (1999). Sensitized slides with NC-Bahia strain tachyzoites, using a cut-off point of 1:100, were used and diluted to the maximum titer when necessary (AGUIAR et al, 2011). Positive and negative serum controls were used in each reaction.…”
