Coccidiosis is a high-prevalence disease that annually entails huge costs for the poultry industry. Control of coccidiosis in poultry production is based on the use of coccidiostats and vaccines. However, along with the problem of drug resistance, there is a concern about food safety and drug residues in poultry products. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium bisulfate ( SBS ) in comparison with monensin ( M ) and their combination ( SBSM ) effects on controlling coccidiosis in broilers. In a randomized design, 300 chickens (Ross 308) were divided into 5 treatments and 4 replications (15 birds per replicate). All birds, except the negative control ( NC ), were orally inoculated with 4 Eimeria species on 14 D of age. Treatments included were as follows: NC, an unsupplemented basal diet, nonchallenged; positive control, a basal diet unsupplemented, challenged with Eimeria spp; a basal diet supplemented with 5 g/kg of SBS; a basal diet supplemented with 1 g/kg of M; and a basal diet supplemented with 5 g/kg SBS and 1 g/kg M (SBSM). Oocyst shedding per gram ( OPG ) of the faecal sample from each experimental unit was counted on 5 to 14 D after inoculation. Two chicks from each experimental unit were euthanized to investigate intestinal lesions on day 5 after inoculation. The NC birds showed the highest BW gain and the lowest feed conversion ratio. The birds in the SBSM group had improved feed consumption compared with the M group in the prechallenge period ( P < 0.05). All supplemented treatments resulted in a significant decrease in OPG. The M and SBSM treatments showed more efficacy than the SBS group ( P < 0.05) in reducing OPG. There was a significant reduction in cecal lesions owing to supplementation with SBS, but the effect of SBS in the upper part of the intestine was lower than the M and SBSM groups ( P < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, SBS has protective effects against coccidiosis in ceca, and the combination of M and SBS (SBSM) did not show any further improvement effect compared with M alone on the control of coccidiosis.

Coccidia specie is classified under the subkingdom protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexia genus Eimeria. Coccidiosis is a self-limiting, infectious disease of the digestive tract caused by host specific. Eimeria tenella (E. tenella) is the most pathogenic species of Eimeria which infected chickens. The aim of the present study was to examine the histopathological changes on the caecum of chicken infected with E. tenella and treated with some Yemeni herbal drug (Plectranthus spp.). Some Yemeni`s herbals have strong effects on the inflammatory disease, fever and internal parasites and some species of protozoa such as coccidia. Aqueous extract of Plectranthus spp. was used to determine their effect on the cecal coccidiosis of chicken. Thirty broiler chickens aged 20 days were divided into 3 groups: Ten birds each. Each bird in groups A & B was challenge orally with 15,000 sporulated oocysts of E. tenella while, group C used as "negative control group" not infected / not treated. Nine day postinfected, group B was treated with extract Plectranthus spp. herbals of 15 mg/ kg for 15 days after the bloody diarrhea was seen. Group A didn't treat. The dropping was examined to notice the decreased in the oocysts numbers and the change in body weight among groups. Histopathological changes and damage of the tissue infused by the parasite in both groups A & B and the effect of herbals amelioration on the tissues was also studied and compare them with group C. Hematoxine & Eosin techniques for histopathological experiments and McMaster techniques for oocyst counting, The effects of herbal plants (Plectranthus) illustrated particularly in treated chickens after experimentally infected with E. tenella a positive anticoccidial herbal drugs activity where it has repaired some lesion, damaged and decreased some destruction in caecum tissue of chickens

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anticoccidial effect of different concentrations of the herbal complex of 4 plants (leaves of Azadirachta indica and Nicotiana tabacum, flowers of Calotropis procera and seeds of Trachyspermum ammi) in broiler chickens in comparison with amprolium anticoccidial. Three concentrations (2 g, 4 g and 6 g) of herbal complex were given to the experimental groups once a day and amprolium (at the dose rate of 125 ppm) was given orally in drinking water from the 14th to the 21st days of age. One group was kept as infected, non-medicated control and one as non-infected, non-medicated control. All groups were inoculated orally with 75,000 sporulated oocysts on the 14th day of age except the non-infected, non-medicated control. Among herbal complex medicated groups, the maximum anticoccidial effect was seen in the group medicated with 6 g herbal complex followed by 4 g and 2 g herbal complex medicated groups. Treatment with 6 g of the herbal complex significantly reduced the negative performance and pathogenic effects associated with Eimeria tenella challenge at a level that was comparable with amprolium when using a largely susceptible recent field isolate. In summary, concentration-dependent anticoccidial activity of the studied herbal complex suggests its use as an alternative anticoccidial agent to chemotherapeutic drugs for Eimeria tenella control.
