RESUMO: Os problemas digestivos são importantes causas de afecções em bovinos e estudos sobre a frequência de ocorrência destas na região semiárida do Brasil ainda não foram realizados. Objetivou-se com este trabalho obter informações sobre a ocorrência de doenças do sistema digestório em bovinos atendidos no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande no período de janeiro de 2000 a dezembro de 2014. No período do levantamento foram atendidos 1.202 bovinos, sendo 19,4% (233/1202) diagnosticados com enfermidades do sistema digestório. A taxa de letalidade das enfermidades foi 49,8% (116/233). As reticulites traumáticas e a indigestão vagal foram diagnosticadas, respectivamente, em 13,3%e 5,1% dos animais atendidos, sendo considerados distúrbios motores frequentes e de alta letalidade devido à gravidade das lesões, demora no atendimento clínico e imprecisão no diagnóstico. A obstrução ao fluxo da ingesta foi também uma condição identificada frequentemente, sendo ocasionada por obstruções esofágicas (4,3%), impactações no rúmen (11,7%), omaso e/ou abomaso (3,4%) e principalmente acidentes intestinais (26,2%), tendo a totalidade dos casos superado os distúrbios fermentativos da cavidade ruminorreticular. Actinobacilose (6,9%), actinomicose (3%) e paratuberculose (1,7%) foram as doenças infecciosas bacterianas diagnosticadas. As doenças infecciosas virais diagnosticadas foram a febre catarral maligna (4,3%), diarreia viral bovina e a doença das mucosas (3%). As doenças parasitárias foram também importantes causas de morbidade em bovinos jovens (9,4%) apesar dos sistemas de criação com baixa lotação e as condições climáticas da região não favorecerem a sobrevivência de parasitos gastrintestinais, demonstrando que não estão sendo implantadas medidas de controle adequadas para estas enfermidades. Os distúrbios motores da cavidade ruminorreticular, seguido das obstruções intestinais e das doenças infecciosas digestivas são os mais frequentes problemas digestivos de bovinos na região semiárida do Brasil. A ingestão de corpos estranhos é um dos mais graves problemas na região sendo necessário intenso trabalho de divulgação sobre medidas profiláticas. Além disso, medidas de controle e profilaxia de enfermidades infectocontagiosas como a diarreia viral bovina e a paratuberculose precisam ser divulgadas, pela possibilidade de disseminação destas nos rebanhos da região.

This study aimed to evaluate the hematologic response and the serum and peritoneal fluid (PF) proteinogram of cattle affected by digestive diseases. Twenty-seven animals were distributed in two groups: GI (intestinal diseases) and GII (traumatic reticuloperitonitis, TRP). The animals were previously submitted to a physical exam. Subsequently, blood samples were collected to perform the complete blood count, determine the plasma protein and fibrinogen, and obtain the serum for proteinogram in polyacrylamide gel (SDS-PAGE). Simultaneously, PF was collected to perform physical and chemical evaluation and the electrophoretic profile (SDS-PAGE). ANOVA at the 5% probability level was used to compare the groups. The animals showed signs of apathy, dehydration, and gastrointestinal hypomotility in both groups. However, GI animals showed more significant clinical changes. The blood count of both groups (P > 0.05) showed leukocytosis due to neutrophilia and a regenerative left shift with hyperfibrinogenemia. The proteinogram of both body fluids allowed the identification of proteins albumin (ALB), transferrin (TRF), ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, ?1-acid glycoprotein (?1-AGP), MW 23000 Da, ?1-antitrypsin, IgA, and IgG. The [PT] PF/[PT] blood serum ratio of each of the identified proteins increased, showing statistical differences between groups (P < 0.05) regarding PT, ALB, TRF, ?1-AGP, and IgG values, with GI animals showing the highest ratio. Intestinal diseases and TRP triggered a systemic and local response characterized by clinical, hematological, and serum and PF proteinogram alterations. The proteins ?1-GPA, haptoglobin, and TRF measured in PF were good inflammation biomarkers and useful as an auxiliary tool for the diagnosis and prognosis of digestive diseases in cattle.

Background: Displaced abomasum (DA) is a common and economically important disorder that affects dairy cattle. Nutritional factors and adaptive responses that occur in the peripartum play a central role in the pathogenesis. The measurement of blood metabolites represents a useful tool for monitoring and prognostic determination in affected animals. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate cardiac, energy and hormonal blood markers, lactatemia, and insulin sensitivity in cows diagnosed with right displaced abomasum (RDA) and left displaced abomasum (LDA), comparing them with each other.Materials, Methods & Results: Nineteen cases of abomasum displacement in cows were studied, including 9 cases of RDA and 10 cases of LDA. The diagnosis was established by means of physical examination and measurement of the concentration of chlorides in the ruminal fluid (> 30mEq/L). After diagnosis, clinical-surgical therapeutic management was instituted. At the time of diagnosis (M1) and at the resolution of the case (M2), blood samples were collected to assess the variables: non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta hydroxybutyrate (βHB), L-lactate, creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glucose, insulin, and cortisol. In addition, insulin sensitivity was estimated using the Revised Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (RQUICKI) and RQUICKI-βHB. The means of the variables were compared, separating the effects of groups (RDA and LDA) and moments (M1 and M2), at the level of 5% probability. The concentrations of NEFA, CK-MB, L-lactate, glucose, insulin, and cortisol were higher at M1 and the RQUICKI and RQUICKI-βHB indices were lower at this moment. L-lactate, CK, and CK-MB were higher in the RDA group, while cTnI, βHB, and LDH did not present a group or moment effect. Cardiac markers correlated with the energy profile metabolites, L-lactate, and cortisol.Discussion: The high concentrations of NEFA at M1 reflected the condition of negative energy balance. βHB concentrations were stable, that may be related to the number of days postpartum in which the animals were diagnosed. The hyperglycemic condition and the increase in serum cortisol concentrations found at M1 can be induced by the condition of metabolic stress resulting from the disease. Hyperinsulinemia were recorded in the present study could be an important factor related to the pathogenesis of DA, since there seems to be a correlation between hyperinsulinemia and decreased abomasal emptying rate. The RQUICKI and RQUICKI-βHB indices was significantly lower at M1, which may indicate lower sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin at this time. Changes in serum activity of LDH and CK may result from tissue damage due to organ displacement, in addition to damage associated with surgery and the administration of injectable drugs, mainly intramuscularly. The elevation in plasma L-lactate at M1 and in the RDA group may be associated with abomasal hypoperfusion. The high positive correlations found between L-lactate and the variables glucose, insulin, and cortisol reinforcing the association between the concentration of L-lactate and the moment of greatest stress. The increase in cardiac biomarkers may be related to the occurrence of ischemia/reperfusion injury in the abomasum, which involves oxidative stress and the production of inflammatory mediators. The hyperglycemic condition and the higher concentrations of NEFA can also contribute to the occurrence of myocardial injury. The correlations found between cardiac biomarkers and plasma L-lactate, strengthen the idea that there is a relationship between L-lactate and myocardial injury. In this sense, the measurement of blood concentrations of cTnI, CK-MB, and L-lactate could contribute as severity markers and prognosis indicators in cattle with DA.
