Show more

“…The option for using external fixation was adequate, ensuring reduced surgical time, besides being an implant of low total weight -approximately 7% of the weight of the animal, an advantage also reported by other authors (Bush, 1983;Guzman et al, 2007;Ferraz et al, 2008).…”

“…In birds with bilateral tibiotarsal deformities, most undergo staged unilateral operations allowing weight-bearing on the untreated limb while recovering from surgery (9,10). The hinged external fixator is a versatile implant (11)(12)(13), allowing bilateral surgeries, and eliminating a delay in treatment of the second limb. The fact that the animals were still growing may have contributed to the success of the surgeries presented in this report.…”

“…Good outcome was reported following hinged external fixation in humans for stabilising luxated elbows though it did result in a decreased loss of joint function when compared to traditional techniques (12). Hinged external fixators were also successfully used for fixation of unstable distal humeral fractures in pigeons (13). We hypothesised that hinged external skeletal fixation would be a useful method for treatment of tarsal joint deformities in young birds, which would allow for limb usage during recovery, maintenance of joint function, and a rapid recovery time.…”
