Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that is common among women of childbearing age. The study aimed to evaluate the inflammatory status among women with PCOS in Gaza Strip by measuring C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration and white blood cell (WBC) count in women participating in the study. 180 women were selected from gynecologic private clinics in Gaza Strip were divided into three groups: healthy control group (n= 60); newly diagnosed PCOS group (n= 60); treated PCOS group (n= 60). Our results showed significant differences in the mean concentrations of FPG, FPI, FSH, and LH in the newly diagnosed PCOS patients compared with the healthy subjects as well as the treated PCOS patients. We also observed a significant increase in CRP concentrations and WBC count in the newly diagnosed PCOS patients compared with the healthy controls (p-value< 0.001, < 0.01 respectively) as well as the treated PCOS patients (p-value< 0.01, < 0.05 respectively). In conclusion, these findings suggest that PCOS can increase insulin resistance among PCOS women which may play a role in the inflammation process among PCOS women.

Introduction: Among the extrinsic factors, homocysteine (Hy) stands out, which is an intermediate amino acid of the intracellular metabolism of methionine involved in the process of cellular oxidation, which promotes the installation of atheromatous plaques and, therefore, is considered as an emerging cardiovascular risk factor. Objective: To evaluate the plasma homocysteine levels (Hy) in overweight or obese children and adolescents and their relation with cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2011 to May 2012 with overweight or obesity children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years followed at the Center for Childhood Obesity (IOC), Campina Grande-PB. A structured form was used to record demographic, socioeconomic and clinics variables and the patients underwent laboratory tests to define their lipid and glucose profiles and measurement of plasma Hy levels. Results: The study evaluated a total of 165 children and adolescents with mean age of 12.5 (±2.5) years; the majority were female (57.0%). Regarding the lipid profile, there was more individuals with low HDL cholesterol (88.5%). Plasma Hy levels were high in 24.2% of the sample. The mean Hy levels ranged from 4.3 to 18.9 µmol/L, being higher in males, obese adolescents and also in patients with high insulin levels and resistance. Conclusions: The results shown in this study emphasize the importance of detecting and controlling the plasma Hy levels as an independent cardiovascular risk factor, and the need for further studies to evaluate the clinical and biological factors related to alterations in its metabolism.

O objetivo do trabalho foi analisar os níveis séricos de vitamina D em pacientes com a Síndrome dos Ovários Policísticos, comparando-os com os de mulheres saudáveis, ambas de diferentes Índices de Massa Corpórea. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, realizado no ambulatório de Ginecologia Endócrina e Reprodução Humana do Hospital Getúlio Vargas (HGV) e do Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal do Piauí (HU-UFPI), no período de dezembro de 2016 a dezembro de 2017. A amostra foi constituída por 151 mulheres, sendo divididas em quatro grupos (G1= grupo SOP peso normal (n = 35); G2= grupo SOP sobrepeso/obesidade (n = 44); G3=controle peso normal (n = 32); e, G4=controle sobrepeso/obesidade (n = 40). A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de um formulário estruturado pelas pesquisadoras, o qual foi guiado por um procedimento operacional padrão, contendo dados sociodemográficos e clínicos. As mulheres do grupo SOP (peso normal e sobrepeso/obesas) apresentaram níveis de vitamina D inferiores aos das mulheres controle (não obesas e obesas), ressaltando que as sem SOP com peso normal possuíam níveis de vitamina D mais elevados do que em todos os outros grupos, o que permite afirmar que houve relação direta entre os níveis de vitamina D e a presença da SOP (p<0,02). A maioria das mulheres com SOP apresentam níveis séricos de vitamina D menores, tanto as de peso normal quanto aquelas com obesidade e sobrepeso em relação as mulheres saudáveis em condições similares de alterações de peso e essa diferença é estatisticamente significante.
