Measurement systems of soil water matric potential and evaluation of soil moisture under different irrigation depths

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The development of new methodologies and tools that enable to determine the water content in soil is of fundamental importance to the practice of irrigation. The objective of this study was to evaluate soil matric potential using mercury tensiometer and puncture digital tensiometer, and to compare the gravimetric soil moisture values obtained by tensiometric system with gravimetric soil moisture obtained by neutron attenuation technique. Four experimental plots were maintained with different soil mois… Show more

“…Freire et al (2018), evaluated the Bourdon vacuum meter and a digital tensiometer in comparison to the Hg manometer, the authors found that both devices overestimate the readings of the Hg manometer, and that the difference between readings increases as soil moisture decreases. The same was observed by Beraldo et al (2012) when comparing the Hg manometer with a digital puncture tensiometer installed at a depth of 20 cm in an Oxisol. These authors found R² values between 0.88 and 0.99, close to those obtained in this study (0.99).…”

“…Although some tensiometer models are currently presenting materials and modifications that enable their utilization in a wider range of ψ m (Kandelous et al, 2015), conventional tensiometers, such as those with mercury manometers, are still being used due to their notable accuracy and sensitiveness, serving as standard equipment for measuring other tensiometer models (Brito et al, 2009;Beraldo et al, 2012). In contrast, this conventional equipment has a drawback in that mercury represents a toxic metal of elevated risk to human health and the environment (Braga & Calgaro, 2010).…”

“…In contrast, this conventional equipment has a drawback in that mercury represents a toxic metal of elevated risk to human health and the environment (Braga & Calgaro, 2010). Therefore, puncture tensiometers are presented as an alternative apparatus to determine ψ m , since these are also considered reliable to monitor ψ m in field conditions (Beraldo et al, 2012).…”
