The "polluter pays principle" (PPP) has been looked at from the perspective of legal values and technical principles, namely of soil science, to evaluate the acceleration of soil erosion and the consequent development of degraded areas in the Uberaba River basin (area: 2419 km 2), state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Having accomplished this goal, the study highlights the importance of PPP for the conservation of soil and development of an ecologically equilibrated environment. The diagnosis of degraded areas was based on the coupling of a Geographic Information System with soil loss, land use conflict and tolerance to soil loss models, and revealed a preoccupying situation because an extension of approximately 905 km 2 (1/3 of the basin) has been considered in advanced state of degradation potentially causing environmental damage (e.g., decline of soil fertility and hence crop production, negative impacts of soil particles export on stream and lake water quality and biodiversity of riverine ecosystems). Facing this problem, a legal framework standing on doctrinaire principles, federal laws and the Brazilian Constitution has been proposed whereby the protagonists of soil degradation are called to assume responsibility as well as the costs of repairing this negative condition. Although the study has been carried out on a specific country under pre-defined settings, the rationale behind the proposals can easily be transposed to other scenarios because the scientific methods on which soil degradation has been defined and mapped are generally applicable, while the suggested legal values are currently applied to many regions on the planet.

RESUMO A caracterização do aporte de sedimentos em bacias hidrográficas representa uma importante ferramenta para subsidiar projetos de conservação do solo e de manejo de bacias hidrográficas. Assim, neste trabalho realizou-se uma análise temporal e espacial do aporte de sedimentos em bacia hidrográfica agrícola afluente do Ribeirão Santa Rita, situada em Fernandópolis, São Paulo, por meio de simulação com o uso de geoprocessamento. Para isto, realizou-se a simulação do aporte de sedimentos pelo método da equação universal de perda de solo modificada para bacias, no período de outubro de 2012 a setembro de 2013. Verificou-se um aporte total de sedimentos de 433,87 t no período avaliado, resultando em uma perda média de solo de 3,635 t.ha-1.ano-1. O período de maior aporte de sedimentos foi de dezembro de 2012 a março de 2013, quando foram produzidos 65,1% do total de sedimentos do período avaliado. No mês mais crítico, fevereiro de 2013, cerca de 15% da área total da bacia apresentou aportes de sedimentos variando de 2 a 15 t.ha-1.ano-1. A cultura da cana-de-açúcar foi a que mais contribuiu com os aportes de sedimentos, sendo responsável por 92% do total e com média de 6,343 t.ha-1.ano-1.

“…Considering all the factors discussed above, the Uberaba River contains a diverse and heterogeneous fish fauna, with two endemic species, H. uberaba and an undescribed crenuchid (a description is in the process by Ribeiro et al) and a low number of allochthonous and exotic species. The Uberaba River has undergone several anthropogenic actions over the last decades, such as the increase of the area destined to grazing, resulting in only 17.7% of native vegetation remains (Valle-Junior et al 2010) and the reduction of the lotic environments due to damming. The impact of human-induced environmental change is dramatic on the structure and composition of the local fauna.…”

The Uberaba River is an important right-bank tributary to the Grande River, in the Upper Paraná River system, Brazil, and the main water source for the public supply of the Uberaba city, Minas Gerais state. An inventory, an identification key, and photographs of the fish species of the Uberaba River are provided, based on samples made between 2012 and 2014 at 14 sampling sites in the river system. A total of 73 species was recorded from six orders, 20 families, and 49 genera. Characiformes and Siluriformes are the most speciose orders and Characidae and Loricariidae are the most commonly recorded families. Most species are autochthonous, nine are considered allochthonous, and two species are exotic. The Uberaba River has a diverse and heterogeneous ichthyofauna, typical of rheophilic environments, with endemic species and few non-native species.
