Inhibition of the mycelial growth and germination of Stromatinia cepivora by plant extracts and essential oils

Stromatinia cepivora is one of the major pathogens of Allium species worldwide. Assuming that substances produced by plants may be used in the management of this pathogen, the effect of plant extracts and essential oils on the mycelial growth and germination of S. cepivora was assessed in this study. The fungus was grown on PDA medium with aqueous and ethanolic extracts (20 %, m:v) of mentrasto, rue, ginger, false saffron, garlic and citronella at the concentrations of 1 or 10 mL L -1 and the essential oils of citronella, rosemary, neem and Corymbia citriodora at 100, 200, 400, 800 or 1,200 µL L -1 . None of the plant extracts reduced the germination of the sclerotia. All aqueous extracts at 10,000 µL L -1 reduced the growth of the fungus from 28.0% to 53.5%. At the 1,000 µL L -1 , the ethanolic extracts of ginger, citronella, rue and false saffron reduced the mycelial growth of the pathogen up to 45.1 %, especially the extract of ginger. The essential oils of all the plants suppressed the mycelial growth of S. cepivora at 800 and 1,200 µL L -1 , especially the citronella and rosemary oils at 1,200 µL L -1 , which caused 100% of inhibition. 5 % of sclerotia germinated in PDA containing the oils at 1,200 µL L -1 , regardless the plants. The extracts of mentrasto, rue, ginger, false saffron and citronella and especially the essential oils of citronella, rosemary, neem and C. citriodora at 1,200 µL L -1 have substances that inhibit the growth of S. cepivora.Additional keywords: Allium spp.; alternative control; white rot. ResumoStromatinia cepivora é um dos principais patógenos de espécies de Allium em todo o mundo. Partindo do pressuposto de que substâncias produzidas por plantas podem ser usadas no manejo desse patógeno, o efeito de extratos vegetais e de óleos essenciais sobre o crescimento micelial e a germinação de S. cepivora foi avaliado neste estudo. O fungo foi cultivado em BDA com extratos aquosos e etanólicos (20%, m: v) de mentrasto, arruda, gengibre, falso-açafrão, alho e citronela, nas concentrações de 1 ou 10 mL L -1 e os óleos essenciais de citronela, alecrim, nim e eucalipto citriodora, a 100; 200; 400; 800 ou 1.200 µL L -1 . Nenhum dos extratos de plantas reduziu a germinação dos escleródios. Todos os extratos aquosos a 10.000 µL L -1 reduziram o crescimento do fungo, variando de 28,0% a 53,5%. Na concentração de 10.000 µL L -1 , os extratos etanólico de gengibre, citronela, arruda e falso-açafrão reduziram o crescimento micelial do patógeno até 45,1%, especialmente o extrato de gengibre. A B S T R A C TThis study evaluated the stability of cashew apple juice in powder, dehydrated in spouted bed and stored in two vacuum-sealed packages (laminated and plastic) for a period of 60 days. The parameters evaluated in this study were ascorbic acid, carotenoids, moisture, water activity, hygroscopicity, degree of caking, solubility and rehydration. Decreases in the contents of ascorbic acid and carotenoids were observed after 60 days. Moisture content remained practically unchanged during storage, and water activity showed a rising trend in the plastic package. In both packages, the powder showed low hygroscopicity and high caking formation. The solubility in both packages was higher than 90% and the time of rehydration of cashew apple juice in powder in the plastic package increased during storage. Cashew apple juice in powder stored in laminated package preserved better its physical and physico-chemical properties.Estabilidade do suco de caju em pó desidratado em leito de jorro R E S U M O Propôs-se, neste trabalho, avaliar a estabilidade do suco de caju em pó desidratado em leito de jorro e acondicionado em duas embalagens (laminada e plástica) seladas a vácuo pelo período de 60 dias. Os parâmetros avaliados foram: o ácido ascórbico, carotenoides, umidade, atividade de água, higroscopicidade, grau de caking, solubilidade e reidratação. Observaram-se, após os 60 dias, reduções nos teores de ácido ascórbico e carotenoides. A umidade praticamente não variou ao longo do armazenamento; já a atividade de água apresentou tendência de elevação na embalagem plástica. Em ambas as embalagens o pó apresentou baixa higroscopicidade porém com elevada formação de caking. As solubilidades nas duas embalagens foram superiores a 90% e o tempo necessário para reidratar o suco de caju em pó da embalagem plástica aumentou ao longo do armazenamento. O suco de caju em pó acondicionado na embalagem laminada a vácuo conservou melhor suas propriedades físicas e físico-químicas.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar a triagem fitoquímica e avaliar a atividade antibacteriana de extratos das flores de Sambucus nigra L. Os extratos; aquoso (10 %), etanólico (5 %) e Acetato de etila (5 %) foram submetidos a testes colorimétricos para triagem fitoquímica e a avaliação da atividade antibacteriana foi realizada pelo método de disco-difusão em ágar. Os resultados mostraram que nas concentrações de 6 e 12 mg o extrato aquoso apresentou halos significativos de inibição para Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa e Streptococcus pyogenes, porém, quando comparado aos medicamentos usados como referência a atividade não foi satisfatória, e, ainda, evidenciou a ausência de inibição para todas as cepas testadas com o aumento da concentração para 18 e 24 mg. A análise da triagem fitoquímica evidenciou a presença de flavonoides com intensa reação de cor no extrato aquoso e etanólico, e de fraca intensidade no extrato acetato de etila. Nos mesmos extratos, pelos testes realizados, não foram detectados taninos, saponinas, antraquinonas e alcaloides. Concluiu-se que o extrato aquoso apresentou melhor efeito inibitório para Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa e Streptococcus pyogenes, porém insuficiente para promover a inativação eficiente quando comparado aos controles.
