Certified reference material to water content determination in bioethanol fuel

Abstract: Recebido em 2/6/11; aceito em 8/12/11; publicado na web em 23/3/12Bioethanol is a strategic biofuel in Brazil. Thus, a strong metrological basis for its measurements is required to ensure the quality and promote its exportation. Recently, Inmetro certified a reference material for water content in bioethanol. This paper presents the results of these studies. The characterization, homogeneity, short-term stability and long-term stability uncertainty contributions values were 0.00500, 0.0166, 0.0355 and 0.0391 m… Show more

“…But bioethanol is highly hygroscopic and could easily be adulterated with water which is colorless, odorless, and not easily detectable . Besides, too much water in ethanol fuel will have a large negative influence on its performance, for example causing engine malfunction. , In fact, the water content in bioethanol fuels has been regulated to be less than 1.0% in the United States, 4.9% in Brazil, and 0.8% in China . So detection of the water content in ethanol is critical.…”

“…Several techniques have been developed for monitoring water content in bioethanol. Karl Fischer titration is golden standard to measure water content in bioethanol . Although accurate results can be obtained by Karl Fischer titration, this procedure is time‐consuming and unsuitable for continuous monitoring.…”
