In this regard, Tabopda et al (2008) isolated and characterized four alkaloids from branches of P. umbellatum and showed they possessed α-glycosidase inhibition, antioxidant and antifungal activities while Baldoqui et al (2009) reported the isolation and characterization of nine compounds from leaves of P. umbellatum including one terpenoid, five flavones and two lignans. In this paper we report the isolation, purification and characterization of an antibiotic compound from the acidic metabolite of P. umbellatum seeds with a view to identify the phytochemical compound responsible for the observed antimicrobial and preservative properties of the plant.…”
