The beggartick (Bidens subalternans L.) is one of the main weeds present in agricultural crops, capable of adapting to different environmental conditions. The water stress caused by water deficiency can affect the germination of weed seeds and, consequently, their capacity to colonize the agroecosystem. Knowledge of germination under water stress can be important to obtain an adequate management of the species in the agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of water stress on the germination process and vigor of two batches of Bidens subalternans seeds under different osmotic agents. It was completely randomized experimental design was used, with four replicates of 25 seeds. The treatments were arranged in factorial 6 × 2, with the first factor corresponding six levels of osmotic potentials (0.0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8 and -1.0 MPa) and the second the batches (Pernambuco and Ceará). For the simulation of the water stress, the test of germination was installed in substrate paper blotting, moistened with solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) and mannitol. The analyzed variables were germination, germination speed index, length and seedling dry mass. Water stress reduced germination, seed vigor and growth of seedlings in all batches of B. subalternans. Seeds of B. subalternans presented greater tolerance to stress induced by mannitol than to PEG-6000 in terms of germination and germination speed index. Regardless of the osmotic agent used for stress induction, B. subalternans seeds did not tolerate water stress higher than -0.4 MPa.

Water availability influences plant metabolism during the various stages of development, especially in the period between germination and seedling emergence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of water deficit during the germination process on seeds of A. oleracea. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design, with four replications of 50 seeds. The treatments were arranged in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, with the first factor consisting of the osmotic potentials (-0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8 and distilled water for the potential 0.0 MPa) and the second factor consisting of two lots of seed. The germination test was carried out on substrates moistened with solutions of mannitol and polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) at the various potentials, in a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) germinator at a temperature of 30°C and under constant light. The test was evaluated daily for 14 days, considering the seeds that had a root length equal to or greater than two millimetres as having germinated. The variables under analysis were germination, germination speed index, seedling length and seedling dry weight. The germination process of A. oleracea is compromised at water potentials of -0.2 MPa and -0.4 MPa when submitted to PEG and mannitol respectively. Seeds from Lot 1 were more tolerant to the water deficit than were those from Lot 2.

CO 2 SORPTION USING IONIC LIQUID ADDITIVATED WITH SURFACE AREA EXTENDERS. The study of environmentally friendly CO 2 sorption agents are growing due to the need of mitigate this gas from atmosphere. Ionic Liquids (ILs) present the advantage of having low vapor pressures and being chemically and thermally stable. Besides, their properties can be designed by varying the groups of the cation or anion. Yet, these compounds present a lower desorption energy when compared to amines based chemical solvents. These characteristics make ILs potentially important for the development of new processes focused on the mitigation of global warming. However, ILs have high viscosity and high cost, making them economically unfeasible. To minimize these problems, bubble glass can be used as an additive in ionic liquids to reduce cost and viscosity. Bubble glass has several applications in industry, presenting low cost and high chemical and mechanical resistance. This work evaluated the CO 2 solubility in [bmim][BF 4 ] and [mbmim][Tf 2 N] pure and mixed with boron silicate bubble glass in volumetric concentrations of 5% to 50%. Data are reported at 27 bar of pressure and temperatures of 303 and 323 K. Mixed systems with 50% concentration of bubble glass showed the best sorption results for both ionic liquids.
