Show more

“…The MRI findings of SCC were first described in 2004 by Kim et al (12) : Such findings include a signal that is hypointense (in relation to that of the muscle) in T1-weighted sequences and heterogeneously hyperintense in T2-weighted sequences, the lesion being in close, extensive contact with the symphysis pubis and presenting wall enhancement after gadolinium administration, without internal enhancement (2) .…”

“…Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can evaluate the actual extent of the disease because of its high spatial and contrast resolution for pelvic tissues and organs. Some advantages of MRI are short acquisition time with multiplanar images, comfort for the patient, absence of ionizing radiation, and, mainly, the high reproducibility in the evaluation of musculotendinous structures in the pelvis which are of great relevance in the parametrium evaluation (8) .…”

“…Firstly described in 1860 by Von Rokitansky (1) , endometriosis is defined as the presence of functional endometrial tissue outside the endometrial cavity and myometrium (2,3) . Endometriosis is a frequent 0100-3984 © Colégio Brasileiro de Radiologia e Diagnóstico por Imagem are more specific than those of ultrasonography and computed tomography (8,9,(11)(12)(13) .…”

“…Despite the asymptomatic nature of the disease in many women affected by peritoneal endometriosis, patients with deep pelvic endometriosis may present with pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, urinary symptoms and infertility (2,5,6) . MRI presents the advantage of fast acquisition of multiplanar sequences, providing simultaneous images of all the pelvic viscera both at rest and under stress (11,12) . Despite some limitations, MRI plays a significant role in the diagnosis of endometriosis, especially for allowing the identification of intermingled lesions in the presence of dense adhesions, and evaluation of subperitoneal lesions extent (4,13,14) .…”
