-The oil radish siliques maturation occurs in a non-uniform way, which makes it difficult to define the ideal harvesting time in order to produce high quality seeds. In addition, the high lipid content of the seed may hamper its preservation. To evaluate the effect of the maturation stage at harvesting on the physiological quality and chemical composition of the oil radish seeds stored under different conditions, the siliques were harvested at three stages, according to three colors: green, beige and brown. Seeds from different siliques harvesting stages were stored at ambient conditions and in a cold chamber under dry conditions (10 °C and 46% RH) and evaluated as to their physiological and health quality and chemical composition before being stored and after 3, 6 and 9 months of storage. The siliques color is not the ideal indicator to define the oil radish seeds harvesting time due to the variation of the maturity and physiological quality of oil radish seeds within the siliques. The oil radish seeds storage in cold chamber preserves the physiological quality as assessed by the emergence test. There were no consistent changes in the centesimal composition of oil radish siliques harvested at different stages of maturation in relation to their color alteration.Index terms: Raphanus sativus, storage, maturation.Colheita, beneficiamento e controle de qualidade de sementes de nabo forrageiro RESUMO -A maturação das síliquas de nabo forrageiro ocorre de maneira desuniforme, o que dificulta a definição do momento ideal de colheita para produção de sementes de qualidade superior. Além disso, o alto conteúdo lipídico da semente pode dificultar sua conservação. Para avaliar o efeito do estádio de maturação na colheita sobre a qualidade fisiológica e a composição química de sementes de nabo forrageiro armazenadas sob diferentes condições, as síliquas foram colhidas em três estádios de maturação identificados pelas colorações, verde, bege e marrom. As sementes provenientes dos diferentes estádios de colheita das síliquas foram armazenadas em condições ambientais e câmara fria e seca (10 °C e 46% de UR) e avaliadas quanto à sua qualidade fisiológica, sanitária e composição química antes de armazenadas e aos 3, 6 e 9 meses de armazenamento. A cor das síliquas não é indicativo ideal para definição do momento de colheita das sementes de nabo forrageiro pela variação de maturidade e qualidade fisiológica das sementes dentro das síliquas. O armazenamento das sementes de nabo forrageiro em câmara fria preserva a qualidade fisiológica conforme avaliação do teste de emergência. Não foram observadas alterações consistentes na composição centesimal em síliquas de nabo forrageiro colhidas em diferentes estádios de maturação relacionados à sua alteração de cor.Termos para indexação: Raphanus sativus, armazenamento, maturação.

Due to its chemical composition and use in folk medicine, the dry standardized extract of Apeiba tibourbou Aubl. (Tiliaceae) leaves (DSEAT) was tested to assess its hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. The animals were treated with DSEAT previously for 7 days, at doses of 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg and 18 mg/kg of rosmarinic acid; the liver damage was induced by administering CCl4 intraperitoneally (i.p.) at days 3 and 7, and 1 h before treating with DSEAT. The hepatoprotective activity was assessed using various biochemical assays such as alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and histopatological studies. DSEAT doses of 400, 200, and 100 mg/kg were not capable of protecting the liver against CCl4. However, the dose of 50 mg/kg reduced AST by 31.50% the dose of 25 mg/kg reduced GGT by 57.18% compared to the CCl4 (p < 0.05). In the liver, DSEAT dose of 50 mg/kg and rosmarinic acid reduced MDA by 27.45% and 63.61%, respectively, whereas in plasma, MDA was reduced in all the groups treated with DSEAT and rosmarinic acid. In conclusion, DSEAT exhibits hepatoprotective effect only at low doses and antioxidant activity in vivo after peroral administration. The experimental protocol was approved by the Animal Research Ethics Committee of UFG (CEUA, no. 177/2011).

Responses of sour passion fruit (<i>Passiflora edulis</i> Sims) seeds from the third recurrent selection cycle during storage

Conflicting responses have been found for the period of conservation of passion fruit seeds. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the response of the seeds of passion fruit progenies to a 24-month storage period. The sour passion fruit progenies from the third cycle of Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro - UENF intrapopulation recurrent selection program were grown in Itaocara- RJ and the progenies seeds were evaluated for: germination potential, germination first count, accelerated aging, first count of accelerated aging test, seedling and radicle size and germination speed index. The germination and vigor of the seeds of the full-sib progenies were assessed by analysis of variance and factorial arrangement with 3 progenies and 7 periods of storage and the averages were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. Progenies 1 and 2 responded better to germination (92% for both progeny) and vigor test of accelerated aging (92% for both progeny), rootlet size (6.4 and 5.8 cm, respectively) and germination speed index (2.91 and 2.85, respectively) during storage. Variations were observed during the storage period in mean of progenies for germination (81-93%) and vigor for all traits, except accelerated aging (84-91%). At eight months of storage, the seeds presented increased vigor; at 16 months, they showed reduced vigor. The passion fruit seeds of the progenies under analysis can be stored for up to 24 months with high and uniform germination rate and no loss in vigor. The seeds from the passion fruit breeding program showed increases in the variables of germination and vigor during the selection process for fruit production variables, proving the efficiency of the breeding program.
