In the peach tree cultivation, the producer has the challenge of obtaining good quality fruits and maintaining production in a balanced way over the years. Thinning favors these parameters and reduces the fruit load on plants. Manual thinning commonly practiced on peach trees requires high labor and increases production costs. Chemical thinning as an alternative to manual thinning, which depending on the species, time and concentration, has demonstrated high efficiency. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of metamitron applied at different seasons and concentrations on the chemical thinning of peach trees in southern Brazil. Experiments were conducted in a commercial peach orchard (‘Maciel’ cultivar), in the municipality of Morro Redondo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during the 2015 and 2016 harvests. In experiment 1, metamitron at concentration of 200 mg L-1 was applied at 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after full bloom and manual thinning performed at 40 days after full bloom. In experiment 2, metamitron was applied at concentrations of 100 mg L-1, 200 mg L-1, 300 mg L-1 and 400 mg L-1 and manual thinning at 40 days after full bloom, in addition to control plants. Fruit abscission, fruit set, total number of fruits per plant, yield per plant, average mass and fruit diameter were evaluated. Metamitron at concentration of 200 mg L-1 has thinning effect when applied before 40 days after full bloom. Metamitron concentration of 100 mg L-1 applied at 40 DAFB promoted fruit abscission superior to manual thinning. Therefore, the application of metamitron to ‘Maciel’ peach trees close to full bloom at concentration of 100 mg L-1 results in thinning practice similar to manual thinning.

The need to decrease production costs along with the lack of man power in the countryside has asked for cultural practices which lead to these factors, such as thinning. Thus, chemical thinning has been studied as an alternative to fruit manual thinning. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the quality of peach tree fruits after chemical thinning with metamitron at different time periods in the south of Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a commercial peach tree orchard with cultivars ‘Maciel’ in Morro Redondo, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, from 2015 to 2016. Treatments consisted in the application of metamitron (doses of 200 mg L-1) on the 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th day after full bloom (DAFB) and manual thinning on the 40th DAFB. Epidermis color, pulp firmness, ripeness index, soluble solids, titratable acidity, juice pH, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were evaluated. The application of metamitron in peach tree thinning did not affect peach color. Changes in the other variables related to the quality of fruits depended on the application period of metamitron in the thinning process and between crops.

O raleio manual de pessegueiros é uma prática necessária, mas onerosa e dificultosa para a produção de frutas. O uso de produtos com ação raleante é uma alternativa ao raleio manual, porém carece de informações sobre seu efeito na qualidade dos frutos. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade dos frutos de pessegueiros após o raleio químico com o uso de diferentes doses de metamitron. O experimento foi conduzido em pomar comercial no município de Morro Redondo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, durante as safras 2015 e 2016, na cultivar Maciel. Os tratamentos constituíram em plantas de pessegueiro sem raleio e o raleio químico com metamitron nas concentrações de 100, 200, 300 e 400 mg L-1. Foram avaliados a coloração da epiderme, firmeza da polpa, índice de maturação, sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, compostos fenólicos totais e atividade antioxidante nos frutos de pessegueiros. A acidez titulável dos pêssegos aumenta com o incremento das doses de metamitron utilizado no raleio dos pessegueiros. O uso no metamitron no raleio reduz o teor de fenóis totais e atividade antioxidante dos pêssegos. Portanto, somente a acidez titulável e os compostos bioativos dos pêssegos são alterados pelo uso de distintas doses de metamitron no raleio de pessegueiro.
