Development and fruit yield of strawberry plants as affected by crown diameter and plantlet growing period

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of crown diameter and growing period of runner tips in 128 cell-trays on growth and yield of strawberry in the field. Treatments consisted of three classes of runner tip crown diameters, between 2.0 to 3.9 mm; 4.0 to 5.5 mm and 5.6 to 7.0 mm, respectively, and four growing periods in trays, 24; 39; 54 and 69 days, respectively. Higher shoot dry mass of transplants at planting and earlier yield of plants in the field were obtained in transplants grown fo… Show more

“…The number of leaves depends on the time of transplanting and the runner tips. If runners will less that number of leaves will also become less in plants (Carine et al, 2010). At 60 days leaf/plant observation shows the 4.78 % increase in the leaf/plant; however the variation in treatment are 10-14 and treatment T 6 shows the best impact on the leaf/plant.…”

“…The highest number of leaves is observed for daughter plants produced by mother plants established from fresh-dug plants. 2. The initial size of mother plants significantly influences the fresh and dry weight of daughter plants.…”

“…Results of many studies show that low quality of transplants is the main limiting factor of strawberry crops [1,2]. A number of components have influenced strawberry yield, including type of planting material [3][4][5], crown diameter [2,6], initial plant weight [3,7,8], and number of leaves [9].…”
