Show more

“…Among the plants treated with chitosan, those receiving the polysaccharide five days before inoculation showed the lowest severity (Figure 3). Similar results were found in the pathosystem bean-Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, where plants treated with chitosan four days before inoculation exhibited lower anthracnose severity compared to those treated in an interval of just one day (Di Piero & Garda, 2008).…”

“…Chitosan, similarly to pyroligneous liquor, is obtained from a renewable source, biodegradable, and a multipurpose material. In agriculture, chitosan-based products have found applications as antimicrobial agents, antioxidants, and postharvest preservatives (Badawy and Rabea 2009;Di Piero and Garda 2008). Other important applications in pharmacology and medicine include drug delivery and fibers and fabrics in food packaging (Kara et al 2016;Liu et al 2013;Rong et al 2016;Suresh et al 2015).…”

“…The capability of changing the plantÕs defence metabolism by the chitosan was shown in several crop species. The polysaccharide is effective to control numerous fungal diseases, increasing the activity of pathogenesis-related proteins and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and inducing a hypersensitive reaction in plants (Romanazzi et al 2002;Ben-Shalom et al 2003;Di Piero and Garda 2008). Other mechanisms elicited by chitosan involve activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, reactive oxygen species and phytoalexin synthesis (Lin et al 2005;Lizama-Uc et al 2007).…”
