This study aims to analyze the production components and the water-use efficiency of corn cultivated with irrigation depths, and also to verify the utilization of multivariate analysis is suitable to highlight the relevant information. Hybrid corn AG 7088 was used as plant material. Two experiments were conducted under field conditions at two different experimental periods between the months of April and December 2015 in a randomized block design with six irrigation depths [50, 75, 100 (control), 125, 150, and 175% replacement of evapotranspiration -ET 0 ] and four replications. At 120 days after sowing, the following variables were evaluated: mass of one thousand grains, number of spikes per plot, yield of dry grains, ear length, ear diameter, number of lines per ear, number of grains per line, number of ears grain per spike, grain mass per spike, cob mass, spaghetti mass, and mass of straws. The results showed that production components and water use efficiency of hybrid corn AG 7088 were not affected by the varying water depths in the first experimental period. In the second period, the increase in water depth supported a gain in the mass of a thousand grains, dry grain yield, grain number per row, grain number per ear, corn cob mass and mass of dehusked ear, reducing the efficiency of water use. The use of multivariate analysis was able to reduce the multi-dimensional space of the set of variables in the three Principal Components with relevant information to highlight differences between irrigation depths and experimental periods.

Rainfall predominantly influences economic activity in northern of MatoGrosso. The scarcity of rainfall limits agricultural production, and its excess hinders the flow of production on back roads. These obstacles impose the need for greater knowledge of rainfall in distant regions of the state, such as Paranorte, in Juara-MT. This study aimed to identify the beginning and end of the rainy season, as well as the frequency and duration of dry days, besides to investigate causal relationships of rainfall with ENSO (El Niño de Oscillation Sul) phenomena. Methods based on rainfall quantity and continuity were adopted. The results showed that in Paranorte, the accumulated annual precipitation varies between 2322 and 2720 mm. The months of the year are divided into a dry period (June, July and August), a period of low rainfall (May and September - ≈ 80 mm) and a period of high rainfall (October, November, December, January, February, March and April, with 214 to 464 mm). Prolonged droughts occur most often at the beginning (September) and end (May) of the rainy season. In turn, ENSO phenomena influence rainfall only in spring.

Sequence of Workable Days for Mechanized Harvest of Sugarcane in Southern Brazil

The probabilities of workable days (WD), as well as probability of having a given sequence of days for sugarcane mechanized harvest in Southern Brazil is a very useful information for planning of such operation. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the simple and conditional probabilities of WD for the abovementioned field operation in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, by means of the Markov Chain, to define the probabilities of sequences of WD. The number of WD (NWD) was determined for 32 years for ten sites using as criteria soil water holding capacity of 40 mm, rainfall ≤ 3 mm and relative soil water storage ≤ 90%. Based on NWD dataset, the simple probabilities of WD and non-workable (NW) days, as well as the conditional probabilities were determined. Finally, the probability of sequences of WD per ten-day period was obtained by the Markov chain. The results showed that Western, Northwestern and Northern, on average, were more likely to have WD compared to Southern and Eastern regions of the state. In addition, the most likely periods of WD were between April and September, being the first ten-day period of July the one with the highest possible probability (≥ 90%). The probability of having a workable day given that the previous day was workable always remained at a minimum of roughly 50% along with a maximum close to 90% at all assessed sites. Finally, the probability of a sequence of eight or more WD per ten-day period was always below 40% along the year, showing that is difficult to have such a long period available for planning sugarcane mechanized harvest in the assessed locations. Therefore, we recommend that fleets sizing should be defined as a function of NWD in conjunction with the probability of the sequence of WD at a given ten-day period.
