Show more

“…Other palaeochannels have been hypothesized for the Brazilian coast (e.g. Abreu & Calliari, ; Souza‐Júnior et al ., ; Conti & Furtado, ; Weschenfelder et al ., ), which suggests that extensive bays and lagoons were produced by the deepening of fluvial channels during low sea‐level events. These areas could have provided the opportunity for connection among the southern populations of this study.…”

“…Thus, its presence in the soils under study may be related to local authigenesis probably also with some contribution from the last marine trangression (Santos transgression), which occurred approximately 5100 year s BP (Suguio and Martin, 1978). Canfield et al (1992) calculated that the half-life of Fe (III) associated with silicates before pyritization was approximately 100,000 year s. Radiocarbon dating carried out on the soils from the island of Pai Matos indicated that the upper 50 cm corresponded to 400 year s BP, whereas thermoluminescence dating of the sandy base (∼80 cm depth) of the island was dated at 60,000 year s (Souza de Junior et al, 2007). The dating measurements indicate that these sediments are relatively young and that our findings are consistent with the presence of nontronite.…”

“…Some authors emphasize the occurrence of clayey-silty or silty textures in mangrove soils (SCHAEFFER-NOVELLI et al, 2000). This claim does not hold true for the studied soils in the Almada River basin (Table 2), and also for other mangroves in Brazil (FERREIRA et al, 2007b; PRADA-GAMERO; VIDAL-TORRADO; FERREIRA, 2004;SOUZA JÚNIOR et al, 2007) and in the world (ARRIVABENE e t a l . , 2015).…”
