A lthough there are studies on nutrition and fertilizer recommendations for the commercial cultivation of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) and works with other types of organic fertilizers such as compost or manure (Oliveira et al., 2003;Yuri et al., 2004; Damato Junior et al., 2005), there are few studies on the effects of green manure on the growth and production of broccoli. The literature also lacks studies relating green manure doses to the production and/or growth of horticultural products.One of the few studies reports the influence of doses of organic compost (OC) on yield and quality of the "Ramoso Santana" broccoli seeds. Four compost rates (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 t/ha) with 0.72% nitrogen and 40% organic matter were applied. The production of broccoli seeds (number and weight) per plant increased linearly with increased doses of OC (Magro et al., 2010 ABSTRACTThe recommendation for green manure (GM) in cropping systems still has little scientific support, with few studies addressing the effects of nutrient amounts from green manure on the growth and production of the crop. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of levels of Crotalaria juncea green manure on the growth, production, and efficiency of the use as well as the apparent recovery of N in broccoli crop. Seven treatments were established; the main with four doses of green manure: 0, 3, 6, and 9 t/ha on a dry matter (DM) basis, applied with 12 t/ha compost. The control treatments consisted of mineral fertilization, the treatment with 25 t/ha compost, and another as the absolute control. Comparatively, production under the absolute control was less than all other treatments with green manure doses and application of 12 t/ha compost. The production of plants grown with 25 t/ha compost was superior to that of plants grown with dose of 0 t/ha and similar to that obtained with 3 t/ha; however, it was inferior to those produced with doses of 6 and 9 t/ha green manure. The highest percentage of N recovered (REC N) by the broccoli plants was observed close to a dose of 3 t/ha green manure, with a maximum point of 37.90% (2.8 t/ha), while in larger doses of 6 and 9 t/ha showed estimated values of 31.91% and 20.49%, respectively. The physiological efficiency of the use of N (EFUN) showed an effect similar to apparent recovery of N (REC N), with higher EFUN from lowest to highest dose of green manure, that is, 3, 6, and 9 t/ha, with estimated values of 70.41, 62.45, and 26.02 g DM per g of N uptake, respectively. The mass amounts of applied C. juncea influenced positively on the growth and productivity of broccoli. The lower mass of applied green manure increases the physiological efficiency of the use of N with more apparent recovery of the applied N.Keywords: Brassica oleracea var. italica, green manure, nitrogen. R E S U M OObjetivou-se, neste trabalho, propor níveis críticos para atributos químicos do solo utilizando-se a distribuição normal reduzida em áreas de agricultura familiar de subsistência cultivadas com milho e feijão-caupi, no semiárido brasileiro. Amostras de solo foram coletadas em propriedades de agricultores familiares do Sertão dos InhamunsCrateús. Para a obtenção de níveis críticos foi utilizada a distribuição normal reduzida que utiliza os dados de produtividade e a relação entre produtividade e o atributo químico do solo atribuindo o nível crítico para 90% da produtividade máxima. Os níveis críticos obtidos para as áreas cultivadas com milho e feijão caupi em região semiárida são: MO (g kg -1): 7,3 e 7,5; pH: 6,6 e 6,5; P (mg dm ): 11,2 e 9,9 e saturação por base (%): 73 e 71, respectivamente. O nível crítico pela distribuição normal reduzida pode ser utilizado com vista à obtenção de níveis críticos para atributos químicos do solo. Os atributos com maior frequência para o índice negativo em relação ao nível crítico estimado (NCRIz) são Ca > V > pH > Mg > K = MO > P e V > pH > P > MO > Mg > K > Ca para as áreas de milho e feijão, respectivamente.Critical levels for soil attributes by reduced normal distribution in annual crops of subsistence A B S T R A C TThis study aimed to propose critical levels for soil chemical properties using the reduced normal distribution in areas of family subsistence farming under maize and cowpea crops in the Brazilian semiarid. Soil samples were collected on family farms in the region of Inhamuns-Cratéus. To obtain the critical levels the reduced normal distribution was used which uses the productivity data and the relationship between productivity and soil chemical attributes and assigning the critical level for 90% of the maximum. Critical levels obtained for areas cultivated with maize and cowpea in the semiarid region are: OM (g kg -1 ): 7.3 and 7.5; pH: 6.6 and 6.5; P (mg dm ): 11.2 and 9.9; and base saturation (%): 73 and 71, respectively. The critical level for reduced normal distribution can be used to obtain critical levels for soil chemical properties. The attributes most frequently for negative index over estimated critical level (NCRIz) are Ca > V > pH > Mg > K = OM > P and V > pH > P > OM > Mg > K > Ca areas for corn and cowpea, respectively. RESuMO:O objetivo deste estudo é descrever as técnicas utilizadas na agricultura familiar e identificar a ocorrência de um possível manejo tradicional na atividade praticada no 5º Distrito do município de São João da Barra, estado do Rio de Janeiro. Para a coleta das informações foram realizadas 50 entrevistas etnográficas com agricultores familiares por meio de questionários semiestruturados contendo perguntas abertas e fechadas, observação participante e diário de campo. Os agricultores são em sua maioria do sexo masculino com baixa escolaridade. O conhecimento tradicional sobre a agricultura é ensinado principalmente dentro do núcleo familiar. Para a agricultura familiar podem ser utilizadas ferramentas manuais e maquinário pesado. Para incremento de nutrientes no solo são utilizadas adubação química e orgânica e lodo de cana de açúcar. A irrigação ocorre por meio de poços artesianos/bomba elétrica/mangueira pressurizada e aspersão convencional. Para descanso do solo e melhor produção das lavouras são aplicadas rotação de culturas e pousio de áreas sendo estas caracterizadas como manejo tradicional na região. ABSTRACT:The aim of this study is describe the techniques used in family farming and to identify the occurrence of a possible traditional management in the activity practiced in 5º District of São João da Barra, State of Rio de Janeiro. For the collection of information were carried 50 interviews ethnographic with family farmers through semi structured questionnaires with open and closed questions, participant observation and field diary. Farmers are mostly males with low education. The traditional knowledge of agriculture is taught mainly within the nucleus of family. For the family farm can be used hand tools and heavy machinery. To increment of nutrient in the soil are used fertilizing chemistry and organic and slime of sugarcane. The irrigation occurs by use of artesian wells/electric pump/pressurized hose and sprinkler. For soil rest and better cultivation of crop yields are applied crop rotation and fallow areas which were characterized the traditional management in the region.
