Cardenolide-free extracts from Digitalis obscura showed significant antifeedant effects against the aphid Myzus persicae and this activity correlated with their phenylethanoid content. The content in phenylethanoids of Digitalis obscura has been studied. Maceration of the aerial parts of D. obscura was used for the selective extraction of the natural compound rengyolone (1) and the aglycone of cornoside (compound 3). Pure rengyolone (1) can be obtained from D. obscura in approximately 90% purity from fresh plant from the CHCl3 soluble fraction of the ethanolic extract (0.8% yield). The ethanol extraction of freshly collected D. obscura showed the presence of compound 3 as the only phenylethanoid. Compound 3 was proven to easily evolve to rengyolone. Due to this instability, and although its presence in plants has been previously reported, the spectroscopical data of 3 are reported herein for the first time. Selective mono-acetylation of compound of 3 led to the active natural compound hallerone (5). The aphid antifeedant (against Myzus persicae) and nematicidal (against root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica) activities of these compounds have been evaluated. Here we report for the first time on the aphid antifeedant effects of 1, 3, and 5. Additionally, the nematicidal activity of hallerone (5) is described here for the first time.

Parahancornia amapa is an Amazonian tree that produces an edible white exudate widely used in folk medicine and food. Studies have found the presence of carbohydrates and bioactive compounds in its composition. The riverside population of the Amazon reports the use of this exudate against respiratory diseases and inflammation. This brief communication aimed to show the bioactive potential of the amapá bitter latex. Samples obtained from four different cities were studied and microbiological, physicochemical, mineral, and bioactive compounds were analyzed (Total Phenolic and antioxidant activity by ORAC and FRAP methods). The results showed relevant physicochemical and mineral composition (Ca, Mg and Zn values suggested by the RDA). Furthermore, we found good antioxidant activity throughout latex. The sample from the city of Cametá-PA showed higher values for Total phenolics, and antioxidant activity ORAC and FRAP, respectively. This study is important due to the interesting composition of Parahancornia amapa, which has the potential to be applied in technological routes in the food area.

RESUMOParahancornia amapa é uma espécie endêmica do Estado do Amapá, na região Amazônica. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a toxicidade aguda do extrato metanólico das cascas do caule de P. amapa. Diferentes concentrações do extrato foram adicionadas aos camarões de salmoura (Artemia salina) e a concentração letal média (CL 50 Preclinical acute toxicological evaluation of the methanolic stem bark extract of Parahancornia amapa (Apocynaceae)ABSTRACT Parahancornia amapa is an endemic plant species of Amapá in the Amazon region. This study aimed to evaluate the acute toxicity of methanol extract of the bark of P. amapa. Different concentrations of the extract were added to the brine shrimps (Artemia salina) and 50% lethality concentration (LC 50 ) was assessed. The results of the brine-shrimp assay indicated that the extract was found to be non-toxic. Acute toxicity was studied in Wistar rats (males and females) after single dose (2000 mg kg -1 ) by oral gavage. Food and water intake, body weight, general behavioral changes and mortality of animals were noted. Blood samples were collected for haematological and serum biochemical parameters measurements. Subsequently, they were euthanized and their organs (heart, kidneys, liver and lungs) subjected to macroscopic and histopathological analysis. There was no mortality or any sign of behavioral change or toxicity observed after oral administration of the extract. Nevertheless, it was observed a significant increase (p<0.05) on water intake of female rats treated with the extract of P. amapa (127.64 mL) when compared to control group (101.93 mL). A significant increase (p<0.05) in platelet count was also observed in both male (288.00x10 3 mm 3 ) and female (220.83x10 3 mm 3 ) rats that received the extract when compared to their respective control groups (128.33x10 3 mm 3 ; 109.50x10 3 mm 3 ). Histopathological changes were not related to the treatment with extract in any of the analyzed organs. These results suggest that P. amapa extract has a non-toxic effect.
