Four-way olfactometer was used to evaluate Laboratory repellency activities of Azadirachta indica, Jatropha curcas and Dennitia tripetala oil extracts on Tribolium castaneum at 10µl of each oil. Each arm of the olfactometer served as treatment arm with the 3 arms accommodating the 3 test substances, respectively and the 4th arm as control. Various concentrations (1, 2 and 3% V/V) of the essential oils were evaluated for fumigant and contact toxicity against T. castaneum at 8, 16 and 24 hours durations. The results obtained showed that T. castaneum spent significantly (p<0.05) more time (min) in the control arm than the 3 arms accommodating the essential oils. Similarly, significantly (p<0.05) more number of entries were made by the insect into the control arm compared with the test arms. The application of the essential oils significantly (p<0.05) caused higher mortality at 8, 16 and 24hrs than the control for both fumigant and contact tests. The mortality of the T. castaneum increased with increase in the concentration of the essential oils. The 3% concentrations of the oil extracts significantly caused the highest mortality, 67.23±8.72, 69.22± 18.74 and 79.55±9.29% by A. indica, D. tripetala and J. curcas, respectively after 24 hours application in fumigant test. The result also indicated that the contact application of A. indica, D. tripetala and J. curcas at 3% concentrations resulted in 63.07±6.55, 70.10±2.51 and 67.4±4.06% mortality of T. castaneum, respectively. The results suggest that the oil extracts from A. indica, J. curcas and D. tripetala can be used for effective management of T. castaneum infesting stored products.

Background: Insect neuropeptides control essential physiological metabolic activities. In our previous studies, Capability/ CAP2b (PK/CAPA) analog 1895 applied alone or as a combination of CAPA analogs (1895 + 2315) was reported to decrease aphid fitness. While this was obtained with the combination of two peptide analogs of the same neuropeptide class, the effect of combining peptide analogs of different neuropeptide classes has not been explored so far.Results: In this study, we assessed the effect of combinations of the PK/CAPA analog 1895 with neuropeptide analogs of four different classes [adipokinetic hormone (AKH) analog: 2271; myosuppressin analog: 2434; kinin analog: 2460; tachykininrelated peptide analog: 2463] on the fitness of aphids. We found that the combination of 1895 and AKH analog 2271 was the most effective one to control Myzus persicae. The triple combination 1895 + 2271 + 2315 provided a synergistic effect by further increasing aphid mortality and reducing reproduction relative to 1895 + 2315. Additionally, a biosafety assessment of the combination 1895 + 2271 + 2315 showed no significant lethal nor sub-lethal effects on survival rates and food intake for the pollinator (Bombus terrestris) and the two representative natural enemies (Harmonia axyridis and Nasonia vitripennis).Conclusion: These results could facilitate establishment of the triple combination 1895 + 2271 + 2315, and/or inclusion of second generation analogs, as alternatives to broad spectrum and less friendly insecticides.

Toona sinensis timbers are generally used in the furniture and building material in Indonesia, due to their reputed durability. The aim of this study was to identify the potential compounds responsible for the antitermite activity of T. sinensis against Coptotermes curvignathus. The methanol extracts of stem wood and stem bark of T. sinensis showed termiticidal activity. Our phytochemical investigated have been isolated two flavonoid compounds (+)-catechin (1) and its dimer procyanidin B3 (2) and one steroid compound β-sitosterol-D-glucoside (3) by bioassay-guided from Toona sinensis stem bark and tested them to antitermite activity by the no-choice test. In addition, we investigated the antitermite activity of (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate together with the isolated compounds in laboratory scale at a dose of 0.8% w/w. The results showed that (+)-catechin had the highest antifeedant and termiticidal activity after 21 days exposure to all other compounds tested, but no significant difference in mortality to its dimer procyanidin B3, diastereoisomer (-)-epicatechin and galloylated catechin (-)-epigallocatechin gallate on statistical analysis.
