Show more

“…More than half of the people living with HIV/AIDS (55.6%) experienced poor sleep quality. The magnitude of this study is in line with the studies conducted in Nigeria (59.3%), South Africa (55.8%), Indonesia (52%) and Mexico (58.6%) (Ferreira and Ceolim 2012;Oshinaike et al 2014;Buysse et al 1989;Salahuddin et al 2017).…”

“…According to a survey conducted in Latin America countries Mexico and South East Brazil 58.6 and 46.7% had poor sleep quality respectively. Depressive symptoms, illicit drug use, a CD4 count < 200 cells/μl, and longer duration of HIV/AIDS diagnosis was positively associated with poor sleep quality (Ferreira and Ceolim 2012;Rodríguez-Estrada et al 2018a).…”

“…The sample was sized to estimate the prevalence of sleep disorders in PLWH, with 95% confidence such that the estimation error did not exceed 5%, considering a presumed prevalence of around 50%. This point prevalence was chosen because it provides a larger sample size and because there is documented variation between 40% and 80% (Crum-Cianflone et al, 2012; Faraut et al, 2018; Ferreira & Ceolim, 2012; Frain, 2018; Jabbari et al, 2015; Lee et al, 2012; Lin et al, 2017; Rodríguez-Estrada et al, 2018). Thus, the expression used was:n=zGC2p(1p)ε2,where Z GC is the value of the standardized normal variable ( z = 1.96) associated with the adopted degree of confidence (95%), p corresponds to the presumed prevalence ( p =.50), and ε is the tolerable error (ε = 0.05).…”

“…The prevalence of poor sleep quality in the HIV population ranges from 40% to 80% (Crum-Cianflone et al, 2012; Faraut et al, 2018; Ferreira & Ceolim, 2012; Frain, 2018; Jabbari et al, 2015; Lee et al, 2012; Lin et al, 2017; Rodríguez-Estrada et al, 2018), compared with 13% to 30% in the general population (Cabada-Ramos et al, 2015; Knutson, 2015; Rodríguez-Estrada et al, 2018). This prevalence is variable because of geographic differences, characteristics of the participants, and various standards adopted in the studies to measurement of sleep quality (Alexander et al, 2016).…”

“…1 According to a study conducted to characterize the sleep quality of this population, the lower the lymphocyte count TCD4, the greater the prevalence of problems related to sleep. 2 Significant changes in sleep patterns may occur soon after infection, but they also appear to be associated with long periods of exposure to antiretroviral therapy (ART). In a study of adults living with HIV who started ART early, it was found that difficulty sleeping, total sleep time reduction and daytime sleepiness were the main reported complaints.…”
