Abstract: The Research Capacity ProgramAs in many areas of Brazil, the AIDS epidemic in Curitiba is relatively stable, but surveillance is important to support public policy. The molecular characteristics of HIV may be instrumental for monitoring epidemic trends. We evaluated plasma HIV-1 RNA (n = 37) from 38 cases presenting with positive serology, who were among 820 consenting volunteers visiting the downtown counselling and serology testing centre. Seroprevalence was 4.6% 3) and the estimated HIV incidence, as define… Show more

“…The prevalence of transmitted resistance according to drug class was 1% for PIs, 4.4% to NNRTIs and 1.3% to NRTIs in that study. In another evaluation, FERREIRA et al 15 observed a similar resistance rate of 8.8% (7% to NNRTIs and 1.8% to NRTIs).…”

“…For instance, a study conducted in Santa Catarina (n = 80) reported a high prevalence of subtype C (48.75%), which increased to 71.25% when the recombinant viruses containing subtype C-related sequences were included in the analysis 24 . In a study with samples from a voluntary testing site in Curitiba, Paraná, FERREIRA et al 15 detected subtype B in 52.6% of cases, followed by subtype C in 29.8%, mosaic BC in 14%, CF in 1.8%, and F in 1.8%. Subtype C was the most prevalent (29%) in a study conducted in 2008 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.…”

“…Synthesis of complementary DNA (cDNA) was performed by reverse transcription with Superscript III (Invitrogen, USA). Polymerase chain reaction amplification was performed on cDNA (pol) and proviral DNA (env) using a nested protocol as previously described (Ferreira et al 2008). Amplicons were sequenced directly using BigDye and were resolved with an ABI 3100 Genetic Analyzer (Applied Biosystems, USA).…”

“…In Curitiba, among 32 HIV-positive samples analyzed by the BED-CEIA assay, recent infection was identified in 25% of the cases, and subtype C was found to be the most common among these recently infected (63%). 15 In Ceará, in samples collected in 2008/2009, a rate of recent infection of 6.8% was found among 74 patients with no previous antiretroviral treatment, who presented at two STD/ AIDS referral hospitals in that state. 16 A study in Rio de Janeiro, on 434 frozen samples that were collected at three VCTs in the metropolitan region between November 2004 and October 2005, found a rate of recent infection of 14% by BED-CEIA.…”
