Abstract: Asthmatics infected with Schistosoma mansoni have a less severe course of asthma and an inhibition of the Th2 inflammatory response that seems to be mediated by interleukin . The objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of some S. mansoni antigens to stimulate IL-10 production in vitro by cells of asthmatic infected individuals. Peripheral bloods mononuclear cells were stimulated with the S. mansoni recombinant antigens Sm22.6, Sm14, P24, was measured in the supernatants of cultures. As the recomb… Show more

“…We showed that the antigens we used were able to induce in vitro IL-10 production, which is in agreement with other studies showing that Sm29 and PIII induce high IL-10 production via the PBMC of individuals infected with S. mansoni or even in noninfected individuals [17]. …”

“…In addition, we showed previously that the antigens Sm29 and PIII are able to induce the IL-10 production by PMBC of S. mansoni -infected individuals [17,18] and that they suppress the Th2-inflammatory response in an experimental model of allergic asthma [19]. The antigens Sm29, ShTSP2 and PIII were tested in this study with regard to their ability to induce IL-10 production and suppress the Th1-response in vitro in the cells of HTLV-1-infected individuals.…”

“…Several reports in the literature indicate that diseases with a Th1 pattern could modulate the inflammatory response in asthma [2][3][4][5]. A possible cause for this modulation is an increase in IL-10 production.…”

“…Our research group has demonstrated that asthmatic patients who are infected with Schistosoma mansoni have a less severe course of asthma and an inhibition of the Th2 inflammatory response that seems to be mediated by IL-10 (Medeiros et al 2004, Cardoso et al 2006. In a murine model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced airway inflammation, S. mansoni antigens reduced the allergic Th2 response (Cardoso et al 2010).…”
