Abstract: The molluscicidal effect of nicotinanilide was evaluated and compared with niclosamide (2',5-dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide, ethanolamide salt) (Malek & Cheng 1974, Singh & Agarwal 1981, Jairajpuri 1991, Agrawal et al. 2000.Control of snails is regarded as one of the best preventive measures in controlling schistosomiasis (Madsen & Christiansen 1992, WHO 1993, Lardans & Dissous 1998 where use of mollusciciding has given very satisfactory results (WHO 1993, Sturrock 1995 (WHO 1993, DeSouza 1995. “…There are papers using Becker with a maximal volume of 250 mL containing 10 mollusks for treatment [ 13 , 16 , 17 ], 500 mL with 10 mollusks [ 8 , 18 , 19 ], 1000 mL with 10 mollusks [ 20 , 21 ], and in rare cases 2000 mL [ 22 ]. However, these papers, changing the final volume and number of mollusks, did not validate mathematically the efficiency of these protocols to measure molluscicidal activity in comparison to standard protocol.…”

“…It may also be due to the fact that these plant products probably affected the ovulation hormone in the caudo-dorsal cells in the brain of the snail L. acuminata 18 . The lethal concentrations (LC 50 and LC 90 ) of nicotinanilide and niclosamide are toxic against different stages of the freshwater snail Lymnaea luteola i. e. eggs, immature and adults 26 . The reproductive capacity of B. alexandrina is reduced when it was exposed to Allium sativum, A. cepa, and Atriplex halimus 11,30 .…”

“…In our study, the N-methylisosalsoline was more active than the cupric chloride, which showed activity only after 144 h (LC 90 = 11.34 ppm). A comparison with synthetic molluscicides, such as niclosamide (LC 90 = 0.45 ppm) and nicotinanilide (LC 90 = 1.39 ppm), used against Lymnaea luteola (Sukumaran et al 2004), showed that N-methylisosalsoline had comparable molluscicidal activity after 24 h. According to the World Health Organization's guidelines on screening for plant molluscicides (WHO 1983), isolation of the molluscicidal compound N-methylisosalsoline from H. scoparia may add to the arsenal of methods to control snails that transmit fasciolosis in tropical and third world countries, where fasciolosis is a common disease.…”
