Resistance of Musca domestica L. populations to cyromazine (insect growth regulator) in Brazil

Abstract: Five field populations of Musca domestica L. collected in poultry farms were bioassayed in order to detect possible resistance to the larvicide cyromazine in Brazil. The concentrations used were 0, 0.5, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 1, 2, 4 and 8 ppm. Three populations (Petrópolis, RJ, Montes Claros, MG and Promissão, SP)

“…Compared with values reported elsewhere, the level of cyromazine resistance reported here for a UK house fly strain is modest. While resistance factors of 2.9–4.5 were reported from North America in 1987,7 more recently RF values of up to 12.8 and 62.5 have been reported from Brazil and Argentina respectively 9, 10. Workers in Denmark, however, reported RF values similar to those presented here (1.6–4.8) 12.…”

“…The prodigious capacity of M. domestica to develop resistance to insecticides6 has led to close monitoring of the continued effectiveness of cyromazine. To date, resistance in M. domestica to this IGR has been reported from North and South America and Denmark 7–10. However, no cyromazine resistance has so far been reported in the United Kingdom 11.…”

“…Several Musca domestica populations were found to be permethrin-, dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (an organophosphate)-and cyromazine-resistant. In the neighbouring Brazil, [29] led a first evaluation of cyromazine resistance of houseflies in five different sites, and three out of the five sites indicated cyromazine resistance. There was a report suggesting the occurrence of insecticide tolerance in tsunami-hit villages in India [30].…”
