Abstract: In this paper a discussion is made on the pathogenesis of schistosomiasis mansoni in mice, presented from the perspectives of "processes", "mediators", "strategies for study" and "disease". These concepts overlap considerably. Regarding "processes", granulomas, fibrosis and vasculitis are discussed. The role of mediators, including cells, antibodies and immune complexes, cytokines and distal mediators is commented as related to the pathological processes occurring in schistosomiasis. Finally, strategies for st… Show more

“…A morbidade da doença, representada principalmente pelas formas mais graves, está associada, entre outros fatores, à intensidade e duração da infecção e à resposta imune do hospedeiro aos antígenos do parasito [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] . A carga parasitária, por sua vez, é influenciada pelo grau de contato com a água, reflexo das condições socioeconômicas e culturais da população 11,12 .…”

“…This protein is the most widely studied of proteins of Plasmodium falciparum . MSP-1 is well conserved among P. falciparum isolates and hence it was identified in the MP isolated from the culture supernatant [42]. This protein binds to erythrocytes in a sialic dependent manner suggesting it is a receptor to a ligand on erythrocyte surface permitting adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum [41].…”

“…The up-modulation of the intrabursal eosinophilia detected in the pre-oviposition phase of S. mansoni infection, could be due to lack of immune modulation that is part of the acute syndrome (Cheever 1992). Indeed, the first peak of blood eosinophilia that occurs in the pre-oviposition phase is not affected by T-lymphocyte depletion , Fine et al 1973, Lenzi et al 1987.…”
