“…The presence of species with tropical affinities over the shelf area could be explained by the predominance of the warm and saline water mass of the Brazil Current (BC) (Absalão, 1989;Miyaji, 1995Miyaji, , 2001) that flows southwards (parallel to the shelf break) to 35°S (Emilsson, 1961). In that region, the BC mixes with the cold and less saline water mass of the Malvina Current and the water characteristics become markedly subtropical, with salinity and temperature ranging between 36-35 and 20°-10°C, respectively (Emilsson, 1961).…”

“…However, the most significant factor for the maintenance of cold-water species, as well as of eurybathic species in the shelf zone, particularly in the north region, might be the penetration of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) into the continental shelf regions. This water mass acts as a vehicle for larval dispersal from cold, deeper regions to warm, shallower areas (Absalão, 1989;Miyaji, 1995Miyaji, , 2001, and extends northwards to Espírito Santo State (Gaeta et al, 1999).…”

Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) collected on the inner continental shelf of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Oceanographic Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I and II

Reports on benthos include studies of Mollusca (Absalão 1986, 1989, Absalão & Cruz 1990, Gomes & Absalão 1996. The first study on cnidarians from these cruises appeared as a report of the Operation GEOMAR X, covering the coast from Cabo de São Tomé to southern Bahia, in the area between the 16° and 22° south parallels (Grohmann et al 2003).…”
