Virological study of a dengue type 1 epidemic at Rio de Janeiro

Abstract: A dengue outbreak started in March, 1986 in Rio de Janeiro and spread very rapidly to other parts of the country. The great majority of cases presented classical dengue fever but there was one fatal case, confirmed by virus isolation. Dengue type 1 strains were isolated from patients and vectors (Aedes aegypti) in the area by cultivation in A. albopictus C6/36 cell line. The cytopathic effect (CPE) was studied by electron microscopy. An IgM capture test (MAC-ELISA) was applied with clear and reproducible resul… Show more

“…Recent (occurring in the previous two months) flavivirus infection was diagnosed for any individual with an IgM result Ͼ 40 U. [9][10][11] In most instances, these infections could be classified further as due to dengue virus or Japanese encephalitis virus, depending on the relative amounts of virus-specific IgM. A serological ratio of IgM antibody against dengue virus to IgM antibody against Japanese encephalitis virus Ͼ 1.1 defined dengue infection (DEN).…”

“…89 In Brazil, an epidemic was reported in 1981-1982 in the state of Roraima, where DENV-1 and DENV-4 were identified. 90 In 1986 DENV-1 was introduced in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, [91][92][93] spreading to other regions of the country. 94,95 The DENV-1 expanded and caused outbreaks in other countries that had been free of dengue for decades or had not experienced the disease before such as Bolivia (1987), Paraguay (1988), Ecuador (1988), and Peru (1990).…”

“…Successive epidemics have been reported in Rio de Janeiro, beginning in 1986 with the introduction of dengue virus serotype-1 (DENV-1) 6 . After an interval of four years, the city experienced an epidemic of dengue virus serotype-2 (DENV-2) from 1990-1991.…”
