Filariopsis barretoi (travassos, 1921) (Nematoda: metastrongyloidea) lung parasite of primates from South America - taxonomy, synonyms and pathology

Abstract: Nematodes and fragments of lungs from Cebus ssp., Callithrix jacchus (l.) and Saimiri sciureus (L.) were studied. The worms from Cebus and Callithrix must be called Filariopsis barretoi (Travassos, 1921). The names Filariopsis arator Chandler, 1931 and Filaroides cebi Gebauer, 1933 are synonymized to F. barretoi. The status of Filariopsis gordius (Travassos, 1921) remains uncertain. The pathology is described. The parasites are located in the pulmonary paranchyma, near the pleural surface, constituting nodules… Show more

“…Coiled, long-tailed larvae were present in the intestinal contents and adult nematodes were widespread in the lung parenchyma. We identified these as the lungworm [Rego and Schaeffer, 1988;Santa Cruz et al, 1998]. Due to the fragility of the adult nematodes, we were unable to extract them intact from the lung tissue and, therefore, were unable to determine the infection intensity.…”

“…Since Filaroides and Filariopsis are closely related mammalian lungworms [Webster, 1978], it is possible that they share the same transmission route. In addition to white-faced capuchins, F. barretoi infections have been found in squirrel monkeys, marmosets, tamarins, owl monkeys and howlers [Rego and Schaeffer, 1988;Stuart et al, 1998;Michaud et al, 2003]. Pathogenicity of the parasite may be low as observable signs of infection were absent in 6 Argentinian capuchins despite the high intensity of adult worms within their lungs [Santa Cruz et al, 1998].…”

“…In Brazil, 2 species assigned to the genus Oslerus were proposed in the first half of the 20 th Century: Oslerus barretoi Travassos, 1921 andOslerus gordius Travassos, 1921, both parasitizing primates (Travassos, 1921). In further studies, these species were included in Filariopsis van Thiel, 1926 (Metastrongyloidea, Filaroididae) based on the anterior end with 3 evident lips, the presence of vestigial bursal rays clearly defined, and the vulva and anus not terminal in the females (Rego, 1974(Rego, , 1988Webster, 1978). Therefore, the new species described herein is the second species of the subgenus Oslerurs (Oslerus) and the first recorded and carefully analysed morphologically parasitizing C. brachyurus from Brazil.…”
