Abstract: The total and specific indices of fleas, lice and mites were determined for ectoparasites on Rattus norvegicus norvegicus capture in urban areas of Belo Horizonte, Minas state, Brazil, from June 1980 to September 1982. In view of the limiting or critical values attributed to flea indices above all the "cheopis" index, proposed by several authors as a complementary measure for bubonic plague surveillance, the community of Belo Horizonte would have been exposed to this infection. The annual total indices ranged … Show more

“…Some physical factors, such as temperature and rainfall, have been suggested to explain the seasonal differences in the intensity, abundance and prevalence of parasite species (Linardi et al 1985;Davidson et al 1994;Moyer et al 2002). Such associations may be related either with synchronization during the breeding period or dispersal of ectoparasites, as the stages of the life history of their hosts (Blanco and Frías 2001;Altizer et al 2004).…”

“…Generally, small mammals are hosts of immature tick stages and are reservoirs of numerous pathogens (Linardi and Guimarães 2000;Guglielmone and Nava 2011;Saraiva et al 2012;Szabó et al 2013). Some rodent, marsupial and bat species present a great ability to adapt to anthropized, rural and urban ecosystems.…”

“…Although this study provided data from only a single year, they show that infection rates are influenced by climatic conditions that affect the size of flea populations (Bahmanyar & Cavanaugh 1976, Gratz & Brown 1983, Linardi et al 1985b). Guerrero et al (1997) and Arrea et al (1998) reported that under experimental conditions T. lewisi increased T. gondii multiplication in white rats, changing the susceptibility of the host to the parasite.…”

“…Fatores ambientais, tais como: temperatura e pluviosidade, também têm sido mencionados para explicar diferenças sazonais na intensidade, na abundância e na prevalência parasitárias (LINARDI et al 1985, DAVIDSON et al 1994.…”
