Mollusks: how are they arranged in the rocky intertidal zone?

Abstract: . The mollusks were counted in field, and samples of sediment and algae were taken for further analysis. A total of 74,515 individuals were found and classified into 67 species, 52 genera and 39 families. Gastropods were predominant, corresponding to 73.1% of the species, followed by bivalves (22.4%) and chitons (4.5%). Caecum ryssotitum de Folin, 1867 was the most abundant taxon, representing 68.8% of total specimen findings. In general, species were mostly found in Middle Littoral zone (samples 60 m and 90 m… Show more

“…The observed differences in shell occupation between the two species of hermit crabs may be directly influenced by the diversity of gastropod populations in the two areas and to the geographic distributions of these molluscs (Mantelatto et al , 2010). However, studies concerning the diversity of gastropod molluscs in rocky beaches are scarce in Brazil (Veras et al ., 2013); such studies could help to characterize the potential source of shells used as shelters by hermit crabs. In addition, according to Martinelli & Mantelatto (1999), hermit crabs do not necessarily occupy the shells of all existent gastropod species in a given area, due to shell characteristics and conditions.…”

“…There are many microhabitats within a given formation (such as tidal pools, crevices, plateaus, etc. ), and even variations in the structure of different MHE along the coast, which affects the distribution and relative abundance of species Bezerra et al, 2017;Carneiro, 2017;Cunha et al, 2008;Godinho & Lotufo, 2010;Martins & Matthews-Cascon, 2010;Rabelo et al, 2015;Sousa, 2006;Souza & Matthews-Cascon, 2019;Martins & Matthews-Cascon, 2013). The degree of air exposure and the distance from the water and the drainage system may be a primary cause of these spatial differences.…”

“…The degree of air exposure and the distance from the water and the drainage system may be a primary cause of these spatial differences. As such, many species exhibit a clear zonation between the lowest and highest areas of the rocky platforms Martins & Matthews-Cascon, 2010;Rabelo et al, 2015;Sousa, 2006;Martins & Matthews-Cascon, 2013). It is even possible to identify some relatively stable sectors along the vertical gradient, with the supralittoral zone dominated by litorinids, the upper intertidal zone dominated by barnacles and the lower intertidal zone dominated by algae (Matthews-Cascon & Lotufo, 2006).…”

“…Gastropoda umumnya ditemukan di antara karang yang banyak tersedia bahan makanan atau pada daerah yang bisa menjamin keberlangsungan hidupnya. Secara umum Moluska yang hidup di laut ditemukan pada zona litoral atau di laut dangkal [5].…”
