Taxonomic revision of doubtful Brazilian freshwater shrimp species of genus Macrobrachium (Decapoda, Palaemonidae)

Abstract: The freshwater prawns of the genus Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 are widely distributed in rivers of tropical and subtropical regions and represent an interesting group with controversial taxonomy. The morphological characters traditionally used to separate species have shown a high intraspecific variation. Doubts about the status of M. birai Lobão, Melo & Fernandes, 1986, M. holthuisi Genofre & Lobão, 1978 and M. petronioi Melo, Lobão & Fernandes, 1986 have been arisen due to the high resemblanc… Show more

“…Recently, new ecological surveys have reported for the first time the occurrence of M. brasiliense in the states of Amapá, Tocantins, and Mato Grosso do Sul (Pileggi et al 2013). Given this wide geographic distribution, it is important to highlight that most of the studies which have been conducted to date involve species distribution and taxonomic reviews (Kensley & Walker 1982, Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1984, García-Dávila & Magalhães 2003, Pileggi & Mantelatto 2012.…”

“…The genus Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 are distributed worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters (De Grave and Fransen, 2011;Pileggi and Mantelatto, 2012). In Brazil, this genus includes 19 species (Mantelatto et al, 2016), besides some introduced species, such as Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man, 1979) (New and Valenti, 2000;Melo, 2003).…”

“…This diadromous shrimp has diversified into coastal populations that inhabit rivers close to estuaries and continental populations living in rivers, lakes and other inland water bodies (Charmantier and Anger, 2011;Anger, 2013). These two groups apparently differ in external morphology and meristic characters (Pileggi and Mantelatto, 2012). Coastal populations of M. amazonicum exhibit a lengthy larval sequence dependent on brackish water for development to the post-larva.…”
