Abstract: ABSTRACT. Longevity and oviposition of Ophyra albuquerquei (Diptera, Muscidae) under laboratory conditions. Aspects related to the longevity and oviposition of Ophyra albuquerquei Lopes, 1985 are studied. Males had a mean lifespan longer than females (40.24 vs. 33.15 days, respectively), while still possessing qualitative advantages during this period. Females O. albuquerquei were fed on powdered milk, fish flour, refined sugar and water, and provided fish flour and moistened sawdust for oviposition. The lengt… Show more

“…This increase in survival on diets with a higher proportion of protein is due to behavioral characteristics of these species. Furthermore, strains of the species that were used in this experiment are already adapted to artificial diets composed of fish meal in high proportion for several generations (Ribeiro et al, 2000a;2000b;2001;Krüger et al, 2003;2004). The adaptation of the high proportion of proteins is a prerequisite for the maintenance of predators in the laboratory.…”

“…The adults were fed with a diet composed of milk powder, sugar and fish meal, in a ratio of 2:2:1, respectively. The diets were modified by Ribeiro et al (2000a) and Krüger et al (2004) from Hogsette and Koehler (1992) and Hogsette et al (2002) that used Gainesville and Budapest diets. The O. aenescens and O. albuquerquei larvae were fed according to Ribeiro et al (2000b) and Kruger et al (2003) modified from Hogsette and Washington (1995) and Farkas et al (1998), who used Gainesville and Budapest diets for larvae.…”

“…However, the numerical dominance of the muscid species O. chalcogaster had not been described in previous studies in South America. Larvae of Ophyra species can occur in extremely diverse habitats, including dung, putrefied meat, and even decomposing vegetal matter, and they are also reported to prey upon larvae of Sarcophagidae, Calliphoridae, and Muscidae species (Skidmore, 1985;Pamplona & Couri, 1989;Krüger et al, 2004).…”
