Background: Considering the importance of Executive Functions to clinical and nonclinical situations, Barkley proposed a new theory of executive functioning based on an evolutionary neuropsychological perspective and clinical research using large samples of clinical and community identified adults and children as well as children with ADHD followed to adulthood. Objective: The present study aims to adapt the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functions Scales (BDEFS) to Brazilian Portuguese and also assess its construct validity in a sample of normal Brazilian adults. Methods: The original version of scale was adapted to Brazilian Portuguese according to the guideline from the ISPOR Task Force. To assess the semantic equivalence between the original and adapted version, both of them were applied into a sample of 25 Brazilian bilingual adults. Finally, 60 Brazilian adults completed the BDEFS and the Brazilian versions of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS-18) to assess convergent validity. Results: The BDEFS Brazilian Portuguese version has semantic correspondence with the original version indicating that the adaptation procedure was successful. The BDEFS correlated significantly with the impulsivity and attention scores from the BIS-11 and ASRS-18 supporting its construct validity. Cronbach's alpha (α = 0.961) indicated that the BDEFS translated version has satisfactory internal consistency. Discussion: Together, these findings indicate the successful adaptation of the BDEFS to Brazilian Portuguese and support its utility in that population.

Objective: Compulsive buying is controversial in clinical psychiatry. Although it is defined as an obsessive-compulsive disorder, other personality aspects besides compulsivity are related to compulsive buying. Recent studies suggest that compulsivity and impulsivity might represent a continuum, with several psychiatric disorders lying between these two extremes. In this sense, and following the perspective of dimensional psychiatry, symptoms of impulsivity and compulsivity should correlate even in a non-clinical sample. The present study aims to investigate whether these two traits are associated in a healthy adult sample. Methods: We evaluated 100 adults, with no self-reported psychiatric disorders, using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 and two scales of compulsive buying. Results: Using multiple linear regressions, we found that impulsivity accounted for about 15% of variance in the compulsive-buying measure. Conclusions: Our results suggest that an association between impulsivity and compulsive buying occurs even in non-clinical samples, evidence that compulsivity and impulsivity might form a continuum and that compulsive buying might be an intermediate condition between these two personality traits.

Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) is a 30-items instrument designed to assess the construct of impulsiveness. It's one of the most commonly used scale for the assessment of this construct in research and clinical settings. Although its use is widely spread, there have been numerous questions about the invariance of the factor structure across different populations. This study explored the factor structure of the 22-items of the BIS-11 in a sample of 546 university students in a French Canadian university. The BIS-11 is held to measure 3 theoretical factors (Attentional, Motor and Non-planning Impulsiveness). We evaluated the factor structure of the BIS-11 using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. We found no evidence to support the 3 factor model. In fact, we found that the factor structure of the BIS-11 produces a 22 items in 5 factors solution: motor impulsiveness, cognitive complexity impulsiveness, non planning impulsiveness, financial management impulsiveness, and attentional impulsiveness. The utility of the 30-items BIS-11 to assess impulsiveness in non-clinical population is questionable. The authors suggest future studies to investigate comparisons with this modified version of the BIS-11 and other impulsivity or personality scales in non-clinical populations to evaluate criterion validity of this new 22-items model.
