Abstract: In this study we investigated the relationship between tambaqui fish (Colossoma macropomum Cuvier 1818) and parasites in two fish farms (L204S and L180N) in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, during a 1-year period. The objective of the study was to describe the relationships between parasites, hosts and the environment. From the 80 fish specimens collected, 100% were parasitized by at least one parasite species. Seven ectoparasites species were recorded, six of the class Monogenea: Anacanthorus spathulatus, Mymar… Show more

“…In these fish farms the stocking densities and management also varied, but the high parasitic prevalence was similar, due to similar management used and the reduced expertise in the activity demonstrated by fish farmers. However, the high parasitic prevalence (100%) in C. macropomum in this study was similar to prevalence (96.5%) reported by Godoi et al (2012) Colossoma macropomum in this study had high levels of infection by I. multifiliis in the eight fish farms investigated. Trichodina sp.…”

“…The levels of infection by P. gamitanae were similar to the ones described for this same host farmed in the State of Rondônia (Godoi et al, 2012). However, those levels were greater if compared to the corresponding host reared in the State of Amazonas (Morais et al, 2011).…”

“…However, this can lead to the incidence of a variety of parasitoses if culture conditions are inadequate (Tavares-Dias et al, 2001a;Lizama et al, 2007;Eiras et al, 2010;Martins et al, 2010;Godoi et al, 2012), which may result in epizooties, depending on the abundance of parasites and on the disease severity. These diseases, however, are most prevalent in newly cultured species, or in newly developed culture systems, and become rare once husbandry practices are well developed.…”
