Abstract: The genus Actinella Lewis was studied using planktonic samples from a black water floodplain lake in Central Amazon region. For species identification the taxa were morphological and morphometricaly analyzed on base in light microscope (LM) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Five species were registered: Actinella brasiliensis Grunow, A. guianensis Grunow, A. gracile Kociolek, A. mirabilis (Eulenstein ex Grunow) Grunow and A. robusta Hustedt. A. gracile is reported for the first time for Amazon State an… Show more

“…Mudstones containing significant remains of M. schumachii also contain numerous specimens belonging to the acid-loving diatom genera Eunotia and Actinella (Round et al 1990, Siver & Hamilton 2011. Both of these diatoms are also commonly found in humic stained waterbodies (Sabbe et al 2001, Melo et al 2010, Siver & Hamilton 2011. In addition to diatom remains, the samples containing M. schumachii also harbored large concentrations of an organism equivalent to the modern taxon Mallomonas lychenensis, and the extinct M. porifera.…”

“…Among the Eunotiales, Actinella Lewis is the second largest genus after Eunotia Ehrenberg, comprising about 60 to 100 species (Melo et al, 2010;Ripple and Kociolek, 2013;Siver et al, 2015). Both of these genera present asymmetric valves with respect to the apical axis, and their main distinguishing feature is the valve heteropolarity of Actinella and the isopolarity of Eunotia.…”
