ABSTRACT. This study describes the composition and structure of the benthic community associated with bryophytes in a first-order stream, located in a biological reserve of the Atlantic Forest, during two seasons. During three months of the dry season of 2007 and three months of the rainy season of 2008, samples of bryophytes attached to stones were collected randomly, along a 100 m stream reach. The structure of the community was analyzed through the mean density of individuals, Shannon's diversity index, Pielou's evenness, family richness, dominance index, and the percentage of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (% EPT). Chironomidae larvae were dominant in the two periods of study, followed by Ceratopogonidae in the rainy season, and Naididae in the dry season. The orders EPT contributed 14 families. The results showed that bryophytes constitute suitable habitat which is able to shelter an abundant and diversified benthic fauna in a small extension of the stream. This habitat provides refuge during spates, and thus minimizes downstream transport of the macroinvertebrate fauna.

Benthic communities are highly relevant in the study of aquatic ecosystems, both for their role in the functioning of the ecosystem and also as markers or indicators of paleo-conditions. Their distribution, as in other communities, is conditioned by abiotic and biotic factors and to their interactions, which determine the structure of the community that is established. The aim of this study was to determine the taxonomic composition, abundance and spatial distribution of the benthic community, by collecting at 20 sampling sites in Caçó Lake (State of Maranhão, Brazil). Seasonal variation in these community parameters was analysed and related to the seasonal displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The results indicated that changes occur in the taxa richness, diversity and density of the benthic species of this lake that are mainly related to seasonality. All those parameters were higher in the dry than in the rainy period. The family Chironomidae (Diptera, Insecta) was the most important component of the community, representing approximately 50% of the total benthic fauna of the lake. The identification of the Chironomidae currently occurring in Lake Caçó is relevant, even at the genus level, considering the fact that this group produces fossilizing remains and could perhaps be good paleolimnological and paleoclimatic tracers that could be used to make inferences on past lake and climate conditions. Sua distribuição, similarmente à de outras comunidades, é condicionada por fatores abióticos e bióticos e pela interação entre eles, determinando a estrutura da comunidade que se estabelecerá. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar a composição taxonômica, a abundância e a distribuição espacial da comunidade bentônica, amostrando-se em 20 pontos na lagoa do Caçó (Estado do Maranhão, Brasil). As variações sazonais nas características desta comunidade foram analisadas e relacionadas ao deslocamento sazonal da Zona de Convergência Intertropical. Os resultados indicaram que ocorrem mudanças na riqueza de taxons, diversidade e densidade da comunidade bentônica deste lago que são principalmente relacionadas à sazonalidade. Todas as variáveis analisadas foram maiores no período seco do que no chuvoso. Os organismos pertencentes à família Chironomidae (Diptera, Insecta) foram os mais importantes componentes da comunidade, representando aproximadamente 50% do total da fauna. ABSTRACT. Composition and distribution of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) in Cerrado-Amazônia transition area, Brazil. The objective of this study was to respond if exist a pattern on the spatial distributions of Ephemeroptera nymphs in different streams and rivers from Suiá-Miçú Basin, MT, and how the streams are classifying according to the species composition. Were sample 12 streams and rivers, in three periods of the year. Were collected 1,356 individuals, distributed in seven families, 31 genus and 42 species and/or morphospecies. The most abundant locals were semi-lentics and with few shaded suggering that most light in the system offer, allochthonous material and autochthonous material like food resources. The greater estimates richness was found in lotic places, emphasizing that the Ephemeroptera presents greater richness in these places, once water current is essential for organic matter transporting. So much in the grouping analysis (TWINSPAM) as in the ordination (DCA) was observed the separation of lotic and semi-lentic environments as for species composition. It had a gradient in the composition similarity of lotic and small streams for lotic and big stream and for last, semilentics. The results of this study show that the physic structure of aquatic environments affect species composition. In that way, retreat of riparian vegetation and streams dam up can take significant losses in the diversity. RESUMO.O objetivo deste trabalho foi responder se existe padrão na distribuição espacial das ninfas de Ephemeroptera em diferentes córregos e rios da bacia do Rio Suiá-Miçú, MT, e como os córregos estudados estão classificados de acordo com a composição de espécies. Na coleta foram amostrados 12 córregos e rios, em três períodos do ano. Foram coletados 1356 indivíduos, distribuídos em sete famílias, 31 gêneros e 42 espécies e/ou morfoespécies. Os locais mais abundantes foram ambientes semi-lênticos, com pouco sombreamento no leito, sugerindo que a maior entrada de luz disporia, além do material alóctone, material autóctone como fonte de alimento. A maior riqueza de espécie e/ou morfoespécie, estimada, foi em ambientes lóticos enfatizando que os Ephemeroptera apresentam maior riqueza nestes locais uma vez que a correnteza é essencial para transportar a matéria orgânica particulada. Tanto na análise de agrupamento (TWINSPAM) como na ordenação (DCA) observou-se a separação entre ambientes lóticos e semi-lênticos quanto a composição de espécies. Percebeu-se um gradiente na similaridade de composição dos ambientes lóticos de pequeno porte para ambientes lóticos de grande porte e, por fim, os semi-lênticos. Os resultados deste estudo demonstram que a estrutura física dos ambientes aquáticos afeta a composição de espécies. Dessa forma, a retirada das matas ciliares e o represamento dos córregos podem levar à perdas significativas na diversidade.
