Abstract: The utilization of plant extracts might be an alternative for the control of crop pests. Between the plants with insecticide potential, stands-out: Erva-de-rato (Palicourea marcgravii) and the Cassava, a byproduct of the manipueira (Manihot esculenta),common plants in the amazon region. That work had as main objective , to investigate the insecticide potential of Manihot esculenta (manipueira of cassava) and Palicourea marcgravii (erva-de-rato) on Toxoptera citricida (brown citrus aphid), in experimental condi… Show more

“…In Brazil, manipueira has been used to control nematodes for decades (Chitwood, 2002 and references therein). Recently, this root extract was shown to be lethal to the brown citrus aphid Toxoptera citricida (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (Gonzaga et al, 2008) and the cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (de Jesus and de Mendonça, 2012). Therefore, cassava root extract offers potential as an environmentally friendly strategy to control pests and this area of research warrants more attention.…”

“…Cassava bitter variety contains the toxic cyanogenic glucosides, linamarin and lotaustralin, and various cases of diseases and health impact of consuming poorly processed cassava are well documented. (22,23) Legumes used in production of varieties of foods in W. Africa possess a variety of antinutritional factors. (24) Most of the leguminous seeds used in the production of condiments are generally not edible in their natural state, because they suffer from one drawback or the other.…”

“…From this perspective, the waste which would otherwise be dumped and negatively affect the environment, can find use as a nutrient source in the community, assisting small farmers, and enriching the local production. In Brazil, cassava is primarily used as alternative source of fertilizer for crops, animal feed, as well as a control measure of plant diseases and pests (Gonzaga et al, 2008;Dantas et al, 2015;Santos Filho et al, 2015). This concept of profitably utilizing waste has grabbed considerable attention as a method of minimizing the negative environmental impacts caused by the disposal of waste.…”
