Chemical composition and acaricidal activity of the leaf and fruit essential oils of Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand (Burseraceae)

Abstract: Essential oils from leaves and fruits of Protium heptaphyllum collected in Tamandaré beach -Pernambuco/Brazil were analysed by GC/MS and tested for toxicity and repellent effect against the two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). The major constituent identified in the fruits was a-terpinene (47.6 %) whereas oil from leaf contained mainly sesquiterpenes such as 9-epi-caryophyllene (21.4 %), trans-isolongifolanone (10.7 %) and 14-hydroxi-9-epi-caryophyllene (16.7 %). The fruit oil was found to be more ef… Show more

“…Among them, the oils from leaves of different Protium spp. have been reported by different authors to contain mainly sesquiterpenes, such as caryophyllene derivatives, and trans-isolongifolanone or β-elemene in P. heptaphyllum [1,22], germacrenetype sesquiterpenes, together with α-copaene, γ-elemene and δ-cadinene in P. icicariba [23], α-and β-selinene in P. strumosum, and β-caryophyllene, δ-cadinene and α-humulene in P. grandifolium [2]. Furthermore, in the leaf oil of some species, monoterpenes have been found as major constituents, besides β-caryophyllene, for example sabinene in P. spruceanum [24,25], myrcene in P. heptaphyllum [15], limonene in P. lewelynii and p-cymenene in P. hebetatum [2].…”

“…Já no que se refere a C. blanchetianus estudos têm demonstrado efeito acaricida de seus extratos (Pontes, 2007;Siqueira, 2013), o qual tem sido relacionado à presença de compostos secundários presentes nas folhas, cujos componentes majoritários, segundo Angélico (2011), são o cedrol, eucaliptol e o α-pipeno.…”

“…Organic Neem (CAVALCANTE et al, 2007) also repelled T. urticae at the same concentrations 24 h after treatment, as observed for the E. uniflora oil in the present study. Pontes et al (2007) showed that the Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl.) March.…”
