Histological study of capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) ovarian follicles

Abstract: The present study aimed to obtain quanti-qualitative data about the follicular ovarian population in Cebus apella females. Seven ovaries were obtained from 4 C. apella adult females. The ovaries were subjected to light microscopy. The number of preantral and antral follicles for each ovary was estimated using the Fractionator method. The preantral follicles were classified into primordial, transitional, primary and secondary follicles. Antral follicles were those that presented an antral cavity. All counted fo… Show more

“…Cold compression is an effective way to reduce bleeding by vasoconstriction. Taking these findings together, we have observed that follicular density was within the normal parameters (Domingues et al, 2004); more than 75% of the primordial follicles were healthy, confirming the success of our procedure. Probably, this procedure also avoids adherences after surgery, which was confirmed by ultrasound analysis.…”

“…The remarkably different follicular population from left and right ovaries found in the S. macrodon female and in the pregnant S. cassiquiarensis female was also previously described in ovaries of Sapajus apella (Domingues et al, 2004). These later authors studied the ovaries of four adult Sapajus apella females, and recorded more follicles present in the right ovary than in the left one (Domingues et al, 2004). They suggested that in S. apella the right ovary has more follicles because it is less functional than the left one,…”

“…Multi-oocyte follicles were observed and previously described in other primates (Harrison, 1949;Graham & Bradley, 1971;Domingues et al, 2004;Lopes et al, 2006). It was suggested that MOFs are a result of an incomplete ovarian organogenesis, i.e.…”

“…In these primate species, as well as in Sapajus apella (Ortiz et al 2005, Domingues et al 2004, Domingues et al 2005, Alves et al 2007, in Macaca mulatta (Bishop et al 2009) and in Aotus azarae infulatus (Monteiro et al 2009) the ultrasound examination was efficient in the evaluation and measurement of the uterus and ovaries during the ovarian cycle phases. The ultrasound examination was also efficient in the evaluation and measurement of the uterus and ovaries during anestrus periods that interspersed with the recorded ovarian cycles in some females during the research.…”

“…and hooded capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) (Alfaro et al 2012), such as the Sapajus xanthosternos and Sapajus robustus, which have their habitats very restricted due to deforestation caused by the need for expansion of cities or farms, leading them almost to extinction (Aurichio 1995, Domingues et al 2004. The genus Sapajus is characterized by living in groups of six to eight individuals usually formed by a dominant couple (alpha) and some of their infant females, which normally do not reproduce, are characterized as subordinate (Linn et al 1995).…”
