The general practitioner and the surgeon: stereotypes and medical specialties

Abstract: There was considerable similarity in the description of a typical general practitioner and surgeon among the residents in general, regardless of the specialty they had chosen. It was interesting to observe that these stereotypes persist despite the transformations in the history of medicine, i.e. the first physicians (especially regarding the valorization of knowledge) and the first surgeons, so-called "barber surgeons" in Brazil (associated with less knowledge and the performance of high-risk procedures).

“…Bellodi 8 noted that even today, the stereotypes of these doctors are equivalent, despite all the changes over time. In another study with a group of Brazilian residents, the same author identified, amongst other variables, personality traits, the clinicians being quieter, detaildriven and more interested in interpersonal contact, while the surgeons are faster, more impulsive and more aggressive 10 .…”

“…For the calculation of response rates, the AAPOR guidelines were adopted: questionnaires with >80% items completed were considered complete, and those with 50-80% as partial (AAPOR 2006). Stereotypes and motivations were listed on the basis of informal pilot discussions with medical students and by reviewing other pertinent questionnaires (Bellodi 2004;Calligaro et al 2004;Diehl et al 2006).…”

“…A review of the world literature (e.g., Bellodi, 2004) and vernacular one (e.g., Pawełczyk, Pawełczyk, & Bielecki, 2007) on the subject indicates that empirical results of studies concerning personality predictors of specialties in medical professions refer primarily to medical school graduates focusing on the personality traits of physicians of various clinical specialties. Studies on the Distinct Surgical Personality (DSP) (Cares, 1961) conducted for over half a century provide the best example of this.…”
