A critical review of the possible benefits associated with homeopathic medicine

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the recent scientific research progress on homeopathy. METHODOLOGY:Homeopathy was evaluated in terms of its clinical research; in vitro research, and physical foundations. The Medline database was the main reference source for the present research, concerning data of approximately the last 10 years. Secondary references (not available in this database) were obtained by means of direct requests to authors listed in the primary references.RESULTS: Clinical studies and in vitro research indi… Show more

“…A British and a German study group described positive effects of homeopathy [39,40] . Two reviews conclude that the clinical results of homeopathy are at best little and the use of homeopathy can not be justifi ed scientifi cally [41,42] . Regarding phytotherapy different results on effi cacy exist.…”

“…Much has been said about potential placebo effects in homeopathy research and the need to control for these effects in homeopathy trials as rigorously as in pharmaceutical trials. 21,22 Perhaps somewhat less has been said about doctor-patient interaction effects on the outcomes of clinical homeopathy trials. 23 It is arguable that a significant amount of variability reported in the literature on human homeopathy trials is attributable to the degree to which these 2 variables are controlled for or not.…”

“…Experimenter bias is a problem that affects all scientific investigations to some degree, but this issue appears particularly problematic in homeopathy research. 21,39 Many homeopathic studies are done on small groups of humans 41 or in very complex animal models that provide numerous opportunities for unintended bias to affect the final outcomes. When BRAN-type homeopathic preparations are studied in simple, quantitative model biological systems, effects are not apparent.…”

“…Almeida's 'critical' review of homeopathy 1 is not based on systematic review of the evidence and is strongly biased against homeopathy.…”
