Abstract: INTRODUCTION: A decline in hepatitis D virus (HDV) occurrence was described in Europe and Asia. We estimated HDV prevalence in the Brazilian Amazon following hepatitis B vaccination. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey of HDV measured by total antibodies to HDV (anti-HD T). RESULTS: HDV prevalence was 41.9% whiting HBsAg carries and was associated with age (PR = 1.96; 95% CI 1.12-3.42; p = 0.01), hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (PR = 4.38; 95% CI 3.12-6.13; p < 0.001), and clinical hepatitis (PR =1.… Show more

“…By adulthood, most of the HBsAg carriers had contracted HDV and many died in periodic outbreaks of fulminant hepatitis D. Unique to this area were infections sustained by HDV genotype 3 and liver histology, displaying a cytopathic noninflammatory process of liver microsteatosis. HDV continues to be an important health issue in the Brazilian Amazon despite the implementation of HBV vaccination in rural areas; in blood collected from HBsAg carriers along the banks of the Purus River in 2005 -2006, the prevalence of anti-HD was 41.9% (Braga et al 2012). Outbreaks of severe and fulminant hepatitis developing on a background of high-HBV endemicity have been reported in the last 20 years, also from Russia (Flodgren et al 2000), Greenland (Børresen et al 2010), and Mongolia (Tsatsralt-Od et al 2006).…”

“…Regions with high levels of endemicity include Central and North Africa, the Amazon Basin, Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and parts of Asia [20]. HDV-1 is ubiquitous [21] and has been isolated in the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Africa, Asia, and Brazil [6,7,12,18,21,22,23,24]. HDV-2, formerly referred to as genotype-IIa, is found in Japan, Taiwan and Russia [11,13,25].…”

“…54,55 Nonetheless, HDV epidemiology may differ in other areas of the Brazilian western Amazon region. 26,56 The low HBV viral load among those HBsAg positive individuals is probably caused by the HDV coinfection that may spontaneously suppress HBV. 47,[54][55][56][57][58] This study is a continuation of two previous studies 2,15 to define the most important aspects of HBV infection epidemiology in this region described as highly endemic.…”
