Molecular characterization of Salmonella strains in individuals with acute diarrhea syndrome in the State of Sucre, Venezuela

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:In Venezuela, acute diarrheic syndrome (ADS) is a primary cause of morbi-mortality, often involving the Salmonella genus. Salmonella infections are associated with acute gastroenteritis, one of the most common alimentary intoxications, and caused by the consumption of contaminated water and food, especially meat. METHODS: Conventional and molecular methods were used to detect Salmonella strains from 330 fecal samples from individuals of different ages and both sexes with ADS. Polymerase ch… Show more

“…The mouth is the typical portal of entry for gastrointestinal pathogens, which are ingested alongside contaminated food and water (Rodulfo et al, 2012). Also, they are acquired via contact with diarrhoeic animals and their contaminated environments or with the faecal matter of a diarrhoeic person (Humphries and Linscott, 2015;Squire and Ryan, 2017).…”

“…The main reservoir of Salmonella enterica includes chickens, turkeys, ducks, parrots and coastal species. Salmonella infections are recognized as zoonotic infections transmitted through contaminated meat and processed poultry products [7,8].…”

“…Since 2000, childhood mortality due to diarrhoea has diminished by 6.5% every year, but this trend requires an acceleration to reach the 2030 objectives. Diarrhoea infections are associated with acute gastroenteritis, one of the most common alimentary diseases; caused by the consumptions of contaminated water and food especially meat [5]. The prevalence rate in Nigeria is about 18.8%, one of the worst in sub-Saharan Africa and accounts for over about 16% of child-deaths and estimated 150,000 deaths chiefly among children less than five years of age which occurs annually due to this disease which is caused by poor sanitations and poor hygiene practices [2].…”
