Abstract: Introduction: Children are an important high-risk group for helminth and protozoa infections. Daycare centers are environments where children have proven to be more susceptible to acquiring intestinal parasites. Thus, the purpose of this study was to verify the prevalence of intestinal parasites in children who attended the two daycare centers maintained by the local government of Uberlândia, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: Fecal samples were collected from 133 children (73 children at the Public Presc… Show more

“…(6) The finding reinforces the need of investment in preventive actions to promote health, especially in education and health, in infrastructure and basic sanitation. (15)(16)(17) The close relationship between hygiene habits and enteroparasite infestation (18) supports the statistical significance (p = 0.001) found between handwashing and infestation variables. Our hands serve as a vehicle of fecal-oral contamination, therefore, the lack or failure of principles of hygiene such as handwashing is a predisposing factor to infestation by intestinal parasites.…”

“…A recent report 8 from the city of Uberlândia, MG, shows a positivity of 29.3% for enteric parasites: G. intestinalis was the most frequent and the only pathogenic protozoa detected. The high positivity rate of G. intestinalis found among those examined in this study suggests the need to adopt urgent measures to control and eradicate the transmission of pathogens in this community.…”

“…This study was based on a sample from an underprivileged population in which a high prevalence of giardiasis was largely observed when compared to studies done in other cities in Brazil 4,5,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][16][17][18][19] . It is part of an "Extension Project to the Community" where two undergraduate students voluntarily worked on weekends, trying to make the community aware of the importance of health care.…”

“…Santos and Merlini (10) , in turn, found a prevalence of 16% in a study that included a population sample of the city of Santa Helena, Paraná, a state in southern Brazil. In the state of Minas Gerais, although prevalence's are, in general, lower than in states with worse socioeconomic indices, there is also great data diversity (11)(12)(13)(14) .…”
