Analysis of GB virus C infection among HIV-HCV coinfected patients

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of GB virus C on laboratory markers and histological parameters among HIV-seropositive patients coinfected with HCV. Lower degrees of hepatic lesions were observed in the triple-infected patients, in comparison with HIV-HCV coinfected patients who were negative for GBV-C RNA.

“…The 5'-untranslated region of GBV-C was chosen because it is a conserved region among all viral isolates around the world. A total of 119 sequences available in GenBank were aligned in Sequencher 4.5 software (Gene Codes Corporation) to design the primers used for qPCR as previously described (Barbosa et al 2009). Samples were tested for the presence of GBV-C E2 antibodies using a commercial enzymatic immunoassay (Roche Diagnostics GmbH).…”

“…Although infection with GBV-C is common in the HIV-1 infected population, it has not been associated with chronic disease or affect the clinical course of hepatitis A, B, or C infection(s) [8]. Over the past several years a number of studies have found GBV-C to exert a favorable impact on the course of HIV-1 [9], [10], [11], [12], [13] or HCV infections [14], [15] with a lower mortality rate, slower progression to AIDS, and longer survival once AIDS has developed. Others studies have failed to demonstrate a similar effect [16], [17], [18], [19].…”

“…Sabe-se que a via parenteral, principalmente para a hepatite C, e a sexual, mais importante na hepatite B, são altamente efetivas para a transmissão das mesmas, embora 30 a 35% dos casos de hepatite B e até 40% dos casos de hepatite C, não possuam uma via de transmissão bem determinada 84,85,86 .…”
