Malaria outbreaks in a non-endemic area of Brazil, 2005

Abstract: In March 2005, a resident of the municipality of Monte Alegre de Minas, State of Minas Gerais, without any history of traveling to endemic areas for malaria, was diagnosed with Plasmodium vivax infection and local mosquito-borne transmission was suspected. The epidemiological investigation identified another 10 cases with local transmission and all of them were related to the imported malaria case that was detected in this region. The potential exposure site was the banks of the river Tejuco, an area frequente… Show more

“…Relapses are dangerous because of their morbidity and risk of reintroducing malaria to areas where mosquito vectors are still present [39]. The occurrence of 12.6% P. vivax relapses that we found is lower that what was previously observed in other studies of imported malaria in Brazil [40,41], but the lack of monitoring for a cure after a first bout of treatment and distinct study methods might account for this difference.…”

“…In MG, Chaves et al. (1995) observed 471 autochthonous cases between 1980-1992, whereas Limongi et al (2008) diagnosed only one case in the same state in 2005. In PR, 851 cases of malaria were notified between 1992-2003 (Falavigna-Guilherme et al 2005), whereas 65 autochthonous cases occurred from 2001-2004 in ES (Cerutti Jr et al 2007).…”

“…The introduction of new foci of malaria transmission in the forest and surrounding villages following gametocyte introduction by gold miners is not unusual. Indeed, in Brazil, malaria outbreaks generated by the arrival of gold prospectors coming from endemic areas were described most recently in Monte Alegre de Minas (south east region in the state of Minas Gerais), 14 and in the early 1990s in Mato Grosso. 15 As for individual vector prevention, bednets were used by 79% of the subjects among which 51% were insecticidetreated nets (ITN).…”
