Dirofilaríase pulmonar humana no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil: relato de um caso

Abstract: We report a case of human pulmonary dirofilariasis in a female patient 45-years-old, derived from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The chest radiologic finding consisted of single pulmonary nodule located on the left lower lobe that simulated lung tumor. Human pulmonary dirofilariasis might be investigated in nodules that are not malignants and require conclusive diagnosis.

“…Even if several human cases have been described in the literature, most cases are accidentally found by chance on chest radiographies and chest computerized tomography scans, which are usually requested for other reasons [295]. Furthermore, even if most patients with pulmonary dirofilariosis present no apparent clinical signs, many of them will present cough, chest pain, haemoptysis, and dyspnoea [295-298]. Most importantly, the presence of pulmonary nodules could lead to the suspicion of diseases such as tuberculosis or lung cancer and in these cases thoracotomy is usually recommended.…”

“…More studies are needed to elucidate the mechanisms that drive these parasites to ectopic migrations. Additionally, many cases of canine dirofilariosis in the Maricá region have been frequently reported by veterinarians, including some of the authors, which denotes the need for control programs for this parasitosis, especially if we consider the close relationship between domestic animals and human beings, along with the zoonotic potential of this helminth, considering that cases of human dirofilariosis were already reported in the same state 37 .…”
