Show more

“…The non-proteic fraction is made up of carbohydrates, lipids, metals, biogenic amines, free amino acids and nucleotides [1,6,8,9]. The bothropic venom varies in its composition among the same species from different geographic regions, due to dietetic availability, and even in the same animal, depending on its age [1,9,15,16,17,18,19,20]. Despite venom variability, some basic actions are universal to all Bothrops species.…”

“…Studies on oral microbiota of snakes are rare in Brazil and the existing reports are mainly on the Bothrops genus, which is involved in most of the reported accidents (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). Envenomation caused by this snake genus is characterized by inflammation and tissue destruction that leads to infection and abscess formation (6)(7)(8)(9).…”

“…Bothropic envenoming corresponds to most snakebite cases in Brazil and can promote coagulopathy and cause hemorrhagic manifestations 3 , 4 . This action stems from the hydrolysis of fibrinogen into fibrin and procoagulant activity that activates coagulation factors II and X 4 , thus making the blood unclottable.…”
